Catch up with Phoenix #5 here!
The Mad Titan
In the last installment of Phoenix, Perrikus made a deal with the Galactic Council that he will deal with Jean Grey personally if the leadership of the council is passed to Thanos, the Mad Titan. Thanos is much more than Jean bargained for as she isn’t able to locate him or Perrikus, which is surprising given how powerful Jean is. It seems Thanos has a few tricks up his sleeve and one of them includes using the Warlock’s Eye.
Fortunately for Jean, she doesn’t have to go through this fight alone as she has found an ally to join her. The ally is someone I’m really excited to see team up with Jean, as I just can’t get enough of the character. Scott Summers has his worries about whether or not Jean can trust her new ally, but what choice does she have?
Meanwhile, Adani is struggling with the fact that Jean has been inside her mind, even if it was to help her. Jean created a psychic barrier in Adani’s mind to block out the voice of every person that’s in trouble and is in need of help. It was an act of kindness Jean did for her, but Adani still sees her as a villain.
The Writing
I really enjoy seeing Jean have an ally in this fight against Thanos, especially since Thanos is able to hide from Jean and attack without warning. Jean has so many feelings of people being afraid of her or hating her, it’s nice to see someone actually want to help her. Stephanie Phillips does a great job at making the storyline tug at your heartstrings as you see Jean’s insecurities play out. Phillips also does a remarkable job at keeping you on the edge of your seat and leaving you wanting more. With the cliffhanger that we were left on in Phoenix #6, I cannot wait to see what will happen in the next installment.
The Art
Marco Renna showcases his talents in Phoenix #6 by making each page a feast for the eyes. With the excellent use of facial expressions on the characters, he adds so much more depth to the already compelling storyline. That paired with David Curiel’s colors and Corey Petit’s letters, there’s really no missing here. Curiel on colors makes the comic feel like it’s out of this world with his galactic energy he brings to each panel. Petit’s letters really drives the flow of the story, making each sentence pack a punch.
Final Thoughts
I feel that each installment of Phoenix is more compelling than the last, as Jean’s story gets more and more eventful. Phoenix #6 has a great amount of continuation while adding in new factors that expand the story even more. Hats off to the creative team!
