Attacked from all angles

When we last left Jean in Phoenix #4, she was fighting Gorr the God Butcher who summoned her. While they fought, they were unaware that the Galactic Council was observing, but were they the only ones watching? Turns out they were not the only ones, for a higher power was watching. This higher power has been watching Jean and the Phoenix Force for quite some time, and feels that Jean hasn’t reached her full potential.

VOTE IN THIS YEARS’ CHEERSIES!

Meanwhile, the Galactic Council have seen all they need to see to establish that they feel Jean is a threat and something needs to be done about her. With Perrikus creating an alliance with the Galactic Council, it seems Jean has no supporters. Even Adani has her chance to show Jean how she really feels about her after choosing her own path thanks to Perrikus. So, what does this all mean for Jean? Honestly, I’m not sure but you can bet I’m excited to find out.

The Writing

Something I love about this Phoenix run is that you really can’t guess what’s going to happen next. After reading Phoenix #4, I really thought I knew what was coming, but that is absolutely not true. Stephanie Phillips does an excellent job keeping you on your toes with Jean. She also has an impressive talent of bringing in unexpected characters and blending them into the story perfectly without them feelings like they’re shoehorned.

The Art

The artwork is simply stunning! Throughout Phoenix #5, each panel feels larger than life. The artwork of the Phoenix run has been beautiful but I would say this issue is the best of the run so far. Without giving too much away, the first few pages are feasts for the eyes. Once you pick up the comic and start reading you’ll see why I say that. Another home run for the artists!
