TMNT: Mutant Nation Invades Area 51?!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation is divided into two different stories. First, we follow Raphael as he breaks into Area 51. Why in the heck would he do that you may ask? Well, because Metalhead is back, bigger and stronger than ever, and he’s got Raphaels little dinosaur buddy Pepperoni for leverage. So the real question here is why does Metalhead want to break into Area 51?!
What are the Turtles up to right now?!
Pacing and Action Drive This Narrative
This one moves along at really good pace. The action is so fluid. Waltz does a great job of moving the story along without holding on to a conversation or moment fro too long. Even when Metalhead was giving a flashback I never lags or slows the forward moment of the story.
TMNT: Mutant Nation is a Dynamic Work of Art
The artwork is so dynamic! There’s a ton of action in this story, so characters are constantly moving, stuff is breaking, and things are blowing up. The colors are fantastic as Raphael tears through numerous agents in all black gear. There’s a lot of great detail as well in the environments. The flashback sequences are beautiful. There’s a lot of great shadowing and filters that make it clear that we’re in the past or in a more present time.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Celebrate 40 years!
Casey Jones Trains With The Foot Clan
In the next story, we see Casey Jones training with the Foot Clan member Natsu. This sparring session is a great story telling moment for some reveals as to what Karai is going through and how it can be seen from different points of view. Of course, Casey Jones learns quite a few lessons as we gets knocked around. It’s really a showcase of action and character development, all while moving along the plot.
The Nightwatcher: Mutant Vigilante!
After that we get an appearance by Beepop and Rocksteady. They don’t do much here other than push Casey around and ask for his help operating a transporter. Their banter is hilarious and the way Casey interacts with them is such a treat. It’s almost look to big brothers giving their baby brother a hard time.
Sharp Dressed Mutants in TMNT: Mutant Nation
They also look really cool in their 3 piece suits and holographic fields that make them look human.Character designs stand out big time in this issue. Panels great a flow or movement that mimics the action. It’s very engaging to the eyes. Bright, rich colors dominate the pages and entices my to stay a little longer on each page so that I can savor the details.
Everything Points to 8/10
Solid story telling and action packed art give this issue all of the little things a comic book needs. Both are a lot of fun to read and leave me wanting to know more. For some, these little side stories from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters may not be in your realm of interest, but for hardcore fans, this series is where it’s at! The stakes are high, the dialogue is good, and the art is engaging and fun to follow.
