X-Men #5:
For the last four issues, the X-Men have been digging into a rash of unusual X-Gene activations, causing horrible tragedies and even loss of life.
The X-Men may have the key to finding out what’s happening as they hold Ben Liu at the Factory after faking his death to save his life. Now, Psylocke and Kid Omega will attempt to dive into Ben’s mind and find out what’s causing all these mutation activations.
Creative Team
Writer: Jed MacKay
Artist: Ryan Stegman
Inker: JP Mayer, Livesay and Ryan Stegman
Letters: VC’S Clayton Cowles
Color Artist: Marte Gracia
PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
The Art:
When it comes to modern comic art, Stegman is simply one of the best.
The style pops off the page and the details are right out of a fine art piece.
As our heroes dive into Ben’s mind, Ryan gets a chance to really play with his psychadelic art depicting the mind scape.
It gets really fun as they dive into his past life before the mutation.
The Writing:
MacKay’s writing really pairs well with Stegman’s art. The back and forth between Psylocke and Kid Omega is some of the best as both psychics try to investigate what’s going on in a totally unique and different world.
The breaking of silence with sharp and nail-biting dialogue is something that makes you turn the page over and over in anticipation.
The words and dialogue are chosen wisely too, not a wasted turn of phrase, just key info and more questions raised that need to be answered.
Overall: 9/10
Ummm … that ending!! Without spoiling it, we find out who is behind all this and boy is it a surprise and yet, something or someone that is going to wreak havoc for our X-Men.
Not sure how this is going to go, but wow, a battle is coming!
