Creative Team:
Writer and Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Creator and Artist: Riley Rossmo
Cover and Interior Colors: Mike Spicer
Letters: Shawn Lee
The Art:
Wow! Where to begin with the fast-paced, brilliant artwork gracing every panel and leaping from the pages as though we were a kid watching TV in the dark again? This issue gets intense; it’s an issue filled with explosions, hand-to-hand combat, and ugly creatures. Spicer, DWJ, and Rossmo collaborate together seamlessly to deliver a world ripped straight out a fantasy and a nightmare. The creatures we become faced with such as a tall four armed arms dealing bat, a frog smoking, a creepy old man-like being, and so many demons, skeletons, and more. It is impressive how they were able to come up with so many unique character designs that all felt as though they had their own story.
Shawn does the lettering, giving texture to the spoken words and making us feel the pain these parents are going through. In terms of artwork, this issue is one of the finest I have seen this year.
The Story:
How far would you be willing to go to save your child? That is the question DWJ and Riley ask the readers in this opening issue. Greeting us in a brutal and horrifying world, they have set the scene for a tale of desperation and even hope. In a lot of ways I was able to connect to this story as a father but, not for losing a child but, for how they don’t know what to do or how to do it and yet push themselves to save Penny and to learn every day. It’s a relatable tale that a lot of parents can connect with. This issue goes at a break neck paced however, it does not move too fast to allow moments to breathe and understand what is going on. The duo have found the fine line between too fast and just the right touch that will suck readers in. It feels different than anything Daniel Warren Johnson has done in the past and it rocks.
Overall Feelings:
The Moon is Following Us#1 is a heart-pounding adventure, asking us how far we would be willing to go to save those we love. Its pages contain haunting creatures, badass side kicks, and hearts. This story will jump to the top of pull piles, rightfully so, as it is a can not-miss read.
10/10 Overall.
