As we celebrate 50 years of Wolverine, ‘WOLVERINE from the ashes.. A new beginning,’ gives us the raw pure Logan we all fell in love with. This first issue takes place before the current runs of X-Men and Uncanny X-Men. Wolverine is a man who loves the simpler things in life, and just wants some peace. However, when you’re the best there is what you do, you always seem to be needed.

The Story for Issue 1
This first issue kicks off where Wolverine often feels the most at peace: in the snow covered woods surrounded by wild animals. While he finds comfort in being part of a pack, he’s never able to escape his past for long. Both the good and the bad always come back to haunt him. As an old enemy hunts him (not Sabretooth this time), a close friend is looking for his help. The mutants are struggling more than ever, and while Logan thinks he’s no leader, the best leaders tend to be the ones (insert sound clip of Jon Snow saying, “I don’t want it.”) who don’t want it. As Wolverine faces his past a new danger unknowingly seems to be emerging.
The Art
Snow can create a sense of calm, peacefulness, and beauty. It can also create a sense of fear, cold, and death. The art in this comic did a beautiful job of depicting that shift as the tone changed throughout. From the sense of calm to some gorgeous action shots, the art was exactly what you would want from a Wolverine comic. The up close action shots were the cherry on top. From a close up of Nightcrawler’s eyes to a full on, snow filled, Wolverine leaping action shot, you’re sucked right into the story through the art.
Rating for WOLVERINE from the Ashes 9.5/10
There is a lot of Wolverine going on at the moment. While my opinion may be biased (as he is my all time favorite super hero), I doubt it. Everything Wolverine coming out right now has been absolutely fantastic, and ‘WOLVERINE, from the ashes.. A new beginning’ is no different. This story gives us the Logan we know and love. He strives to find peace and happiness, but he always shows up when needed. Sure, it’s often out of the need for revenge, but he’s still there. While I always enjoy a good fight between Sabretooth and his favorite little runt, it was nice seeing an enemy I didn’t expect.
Overall, if you want some classic Logan, fantastic fight scenes, and want in on the start of something new, head to your local comic shop and grab, ‘WOLVERINE, from the ashes.. A new beginning.’
