Gwen has been through a lot on Earth-616 since she arrived. She’s been attacked, her fellow Spider-People don’t trust her, she’s gained these random new powers that she has no control over. And the hard times keep rolling. Gwen awakens from a nightmare to Silk making her pancakes. It becomes clear that Silk is there to tell Gwen that the Spider-heroes don’t want her involved with any Spider business. With unpredictable powers, a warrant out for Gwen’s arrest, and villains who are out for Gwen’s blood, it’s not an unreasonable request.

While I understand Silk’s point, my heart goes out to Gwen. She didn’t ask to be put into this universe, she’s not allowed to tell her friends why she’s there, and she really is alone in 616. Since Silk’s pancakes proved to be less than edible, Gwen heads to the coffee shop. Coming up short when trying to pay for her breakfast, a kind stranger offers to pay for her coffee and croissant. While it seems like Gwen is finally making a friend here, the coffee shop is attacked by a very familiar Spider-Man villain. But he’s asking for help?

The Art

I am a huge fan of Paolo Villanelli and his fantastic work he’s done, specifically the Black Widow and Hawkeye run(read all about it here). Villanelli paired with Matt Milla and Ariana Maher brought a new depth to this Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider run. Personally, I think their artwork brought more tension to the story, in the best way. Something I HAVE to mention was the Cyclops easter egg at the beginning of the comic. The artists definitely know exactly what I like.

The Writing

As a Stephanie Phillips fan, I think she does a fantastic job with Gwen and her multiversal problems in the Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider run. The fourth installment felt like it was more for continuity rather than storyline events. I like seeing how the other Spiders are handling Gwen and the problems that have been brought with her arrival in 616. I think it all ties in very well together for the overall story. Another thing I like it seeing Gwen having to deal with the classic Spider-Man villains. All in all, Phillips has me hooked on this run and I’m excited to see where it goes.

I give it an 8 out of 10
