This issue starts with re-introducing the Miles Morales’s character. Miles uses his journal to explain, that he is on his way to Puerto Rico. One thing that this first issue right away, is Miles’s is going back to his roots. Miles is on his way to go and stay with his grandmother, affectionately his “abuela.” Miles gets a little side track, by being distracted by the beautiful sights and sounds of Puerto Rico. He sort of also has a bit of a culture shock as well. It has been a while since Miles spoke in Spanish. To the reader, all the dialogue is English, but Miles speaks Spanish to the other kids he meets.
His grandmother greets him, but also is angered that Miles got side tracked. Miles is excited to see her, and he meets his grandma’s “sisters” or otherwise known as his Aunties. They look out not only for Miles’s grandma, but the entire neighborhood. His eyes are opened to how much the community not only supports him, but, the culture is different than New York. Miles has a brief conversation with his grandmother, about his grandfather, who passed away. Miles looks and acts a lot like his grandfather. He wants to know more about him, as well as more family that live in Puerto Rico.
A bad storm comes into Puerto Rico, and Miles feels like investigating where it is coming from. Miles had packed his Spider-Man suit, and goes out and swings out into the storm. He is nervous to be in the storm, but he sees a familiar face. Storm, who says she’s not responsible for this storm, came to rely a message to Miles. Storm is here to help, and not cause more damage to Puerto Rico. Storm really wants to help, and is delighted to meet Spider-Man. This concludes the issue, and hopefully Miles and Storm cross paths again.
I really enjoyed that Miles is interested in learning about his roots. One of the main complaints I’ve heard, is that Miles has no Spanish representation. This series seems to put Miles’s roots as the most important. I am excited to see what he finds out learning about his family. I am also intrigued to see his relationship with his parents, as soon as they arrive to Puerto Rico. As far as the art, it is wonderful to see Miles’s suit so detailed, and it looks great. As well as the art style in each panel, is unique in its’ own way.
I give this issue a 8.5/10.
