Have you ever wondered to yourself, what if Superman needed to feel good in order to be strong and to do good? This unique tale of a world where there is only one hero of whom his city knows his identity: Johnathan Prufrock takes this question and delivers it to new heights.
This is an interesting story where our hero has no enemies and so how can it be written in a way that makes the reader care about this story?
SUPPORT THE KICKSTARTER UNTIL JULY 17TH
Trevor quickly puts those questions and doubts to rest as he launches us into something superhero comics have not taken us to before. Johnathan needs to feel good both mentally and physically to be able to save the day. His strength comes from the amount of serotonin that floods into his brain.
If there is not much at that time of need then he cannot save the day. The stress of needing to constantly save the day is explored in the first two issues of this series.
It takes such a simple question and explores real-life scenarios such as toxic masculinity where perhaps dads from all over or men from various walks of life can connect with this hero and even women alike as we have all been in positions to be able to do some good but, have we always felt like it?
Exploring further, Trevor dives deep into relationship dynamics that factor into his powers; what if the surrounding personal relationships are not good?
What if your partner knew you had this power and you simply needed a break and expressed this? How would they react? It’s the depth to which Trevor takes these and carries them throughout that drew me in immediately to this book.
As for the artwork, Ryan Best cements this as a must-read due to the level of detail and dynamics we, the reader, are given. There are scenarios where, as the reader, we can see the cape flowing in the wind, which Ryan captures in such a fascinating manner. The coloring with reds and whites is so vivid that this lends to being such an appealing piece of work.
It will not be long before either of these creators work on bigger things. Rise is a prime example of what Pocket Watch Press is doing and its abilities.
