A Hero’s Job is Never Done

X-Men: Blood Hunt – Psylocke #1 starts in Osaka, Japan moments before the sun goes dark. As soon as darkness covers Japan, chaos unfolds over the public. Cut to Psylocke relaxing in a steamy jacuzzi with John Graycrow enjoying the view. They’re both trying to appreciate a break from being a hero when the darkness reaches them. Always the hero, Psylocke heads toward the city when she feels the death and pain happening everywhere.

Trauma Leads to Chaos

Arriving to the city, they’re met with terror and bloodshed everywhere. After being attacked by an unknown creature, Psylocke states that all of Japan’s monsters are on the loose. At that moment, Psylocke are attacked by Kuchisake-Onna, a terrifying monster that’s a woman with a slit for a mouth. Kuchisake-Onna is an ancient Japanese monster that was bred from her trauma as a human. Psylocke and John must somehow take down the monster while keeping the citizens of Osaka safe during the Blood Hunt.

The Art

I found the art to be terrifying in the best way. The way the monsters were drawn and colored left a chill down your spine. It’s exactly the vibe you want from a Blood Hunt comic book. Something I really loved was how this comic was so tailor made for Psylocke with the bright purples and red juxtaposed the darkness of the panels. Psylocke looked incredible throughout the entire book! The artists really outdid themselves with X-Men: Blood Hunt – Psylocke #1.

The Writing

For one comic book, this sure had everything you’d want. You had Psylocke feeling conflicted on being back in Japan, her passionate feelings for John, the trauma from Kuchisake-Onna, and so much more. I think this was a solid Psylocke comic book and was handled perfectly for the Blood Hunt event. Steve Foxe does such a great job with each X-Men character, so it comes as no surprise that this one was banger.

Final Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed X-Men: Blood Hunt – Psylocke #1. It was a fun read as well as having the darkness and grittiness that I love. I can’t wait to see more of Psylocke! The Blood Hunt event continues to be a treat to readers and fans!

I give this a 8.5 out of 10
