An Exciting Conclusion
We’re at the end of the X-Men ’97 run and I want so much more! This run was so much fun with a perfect ending. Getting into the fourth issue of X-Men ’97, we pick up right where we left off with #3. We’re at Jean’s baby shower at her parents house thrown by her fellow X-Men. Every future mom deserves a baby shower, but Jean being an X-Man, you can bet that it won’t go off without a hitch or two.
Baby Shower Blues
Just as Storm reassures that Jean can relax and enjoy the baby shower, the television starts to buzz signaling the baby shower is about to be cut short. The Marauders make quite the entrance busting into the Grey’s house. Well, The Marauders minus Sabretooth, who’s watching the live view from Mister Sinister’s lair. Sabretooth says if The Marauders can’t handle this battle without him, then they’re of no use to him anyways.
The X-Men start to fight with all their might, but they’re down a team member. Jean being pregnant and sitting this one out is the safe decision, after all. The Marauders are giving them a run for their money. It ends up being up to Wolverine to change up the game plan for the X-Men to be victorious.
The Art
The art in X-Men ’97 #4 is exactly what you’d want in a prelude for the Disney+ show. The colors are vibrant and go hand in hand with the great drawings of our favorite mutants. I like that they’re done in the same style as the show, making it really feel connected to the show. One thing I loved the most is how Storm was illustrated, especially when you see her mid-transformation into her white X-Men suit. Storm is such a strong character, and that’s exactly how Salva Espin and Matt Milla made her look.
The Writing
I can’t say enough about how much I loved this run. I loved the Disney+ series and this just hit home when the series season one ended. Steve Foxe does such a extraordinary job when writing the X-Men stories, I think it just shows how much respect he has for the characters. I love how each X-Men got their time to shine through the comic run, showcasing that each one is an important part of the team. Every bit of dialogue that was written I could hear in their voices. This just felt really authentic to me regarding the characters.
Final Thoughts
I really do hope they continue the X-Men ’97 comic stories. I think there’s lots of opportunities to have spin off stories regarding X-Men ’97. This run made the show feel even bigger than it already did. The creative team really showcased their talents with this run and as an X-Men fan, I couldn’t be more grateful. Hats off to everyone that worked on this!
