For decades before the MCU made him a household name, Thanos was just as bada$$ in the comics since his first appearance way back in Iron Man #55.
Furthermore, “Infinity Gauntlet” was such a huge crossover in the 1990’s and one that really showed the Mad Titan’s true power and hunger for death at all costs.
It’s a run that lives in the hearts and minds of millions of Marvel fans.
Now, Marvel brings us “The Infinity Watch,” where over the next few months we’ll once again see Thanos covet death, but in a brand new way – as an Infinity Stone.
Wait What?!
You didn’t read that wrong.
The opening of Thanos Annual #1 explains the Mad Titan’s tragic past, his love for Lady Death and how he has now trapped her in a brand new Infinity Stone – The Death Stone.
After failing to make the new living stone work, Thanos vows to once again collect the other stones and wield their unmatched power.
Basically, the Marvel Universe is screwed!
Living Stones??
As Thanos hunts for his coveted Infinity Stones, he’s surprised to find two of them just having lattes at a coffee shop.
How can this be?? Well, Star and Quantum are bonded with two of the stones and they live within them, giving them great power. Great power of course Thanos wants for himself.
Ironic huh? Thanos turned his love Death into a stone and all the while, the other stones have become living creatures.
And creatures that do not want to go with Thanos and be put into his Gauntlet once again.
But Thanos is able to get the upper hand on Star, using the Death Stone to take her captive, while Quantum escapes.
The Mad Titan
With Star in his possession, Thanos shows his true colors, dissecting her and taking the stone right out of her person.
Luckily, Star has a little backup as Quantum and Overtime show up to bring her back and stop Thanos in his tracks.
But the Mad Titan is nothing if not experienced in battle and these young heroes are no match for this icon.
He takes them down one by one, using his rage, skill and experience.
These cocky kids brought three stones right to one of the greatest supervillains the universe has ever known.
But while Thanos was yet again professing his love for Death, it seems she still resists and escapes, giving our young heroes enough time to do the same.
Now, That’s a Twist
In a surprise cliffhanger at the very end of the book, we see where the Death Stone lands.
At a graveyard, looking for a viable host. And she found one in the name of Phillip Coulson.
Yeah, that happened!
Final Thoughts – 8/10
Our story closes with a chilling line about Thanos.
“How many times can one being be spurned before he breaks? Let’s find out.”
Damn, this is going to be fun.
