Rat City is a story, set in the future of 2107, in Alat, Azerbaijan. It centers around a team, similar to how a SWAT team is in the United States. Many of the military-based trained, and ready to tackle anything.

This particular mission was to find individuals to get answers in their mission.  In this first issue, it centers around Peter Cairn, a no nonsense soldier, who just wants to get the job done. Peter is very aggressive, in the way that he works with the team. As well as, not following what the team is doing either.

Specifically, Peter and the team were after a warlord, who is withholding aid that would help humanity. As well as that he was keeping weapons for himself. They ended up finding him, and Peter questioned him, and he ended up deceased. This issue specifically has a lot of technology, that is beyond the technical advances of today.

Towards the middle of the issue, Peter ends up trapped underneath a car, and he can’t get out. He passes out, and he was able to be dragged out by the medical team, who he sees when he wakes up. Peter and some of the other part of the team, is informed that they all have lost their legs in battle.

The good news is,  that he is able to receive prosthetic legs, and get back to being on the force. The doctors operate, and Peter shows his skills of using the prosthetics very quickly. Peter quickly realizes, that the legs are harder to control, and also they shock his entire body.

What I love about this issue, is the disability representation. As someone with a disability, they handled Peter’s amputee story with care. I can tell that they really showed through the comic panels, how detrimental it was to get him back on his feet. Another thing I love about this first issue, is that Peter definitely has leadership qualities. Even though, they tell him to do certain things, he marches to his own beat. I do also enjoy the friendship he has with at least one other member of the team.

Each comic panel is beautiful, the colors are fresh and also, as the reader I was captivated immediately.  It shows all the brute and the roughness of what the 2107 world looks like. It gives that sci-fi feeling immediately, especially with all the technology that they use throughout the story.  I cannot wait to read the second issue.

9/10.
