Good is only as great as the evil it faces….

Throughout the landscape of time, the original “Fight Forever” has given characters new levels of depth. It adds to drama. It adds to emotion. It makes victory that more sweeter or defeat much more poisonous. Even when stories cross over to pop culture, this theme only amplifies.

This applies to one of pop culture’s biggest fandoms. A new universe has kicked off a brand new incarnation of a legendary fight between good and evil. Ever since making their debut in comic from in 1982, G.I. JOE vs. CORBA has been a box office draw for fans.

In 2023, the fight found a new home via Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics. Spiraling out of the pages of Transformers #2 was the beginnings of the iconic GI Joe: DUKE. Fans know that of Duke is around, it’s only a matter of time until his arch nemesis makes his grand appearance.

That wait is now over….

COBRA COMMANDER #1 hits comic shops via Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooten. The face of fear becomes the center of his own twisted tale. How does the figure who rises to the become the leader of the world’s most dangerous terrorist organization start?

It’s a question that requires the N.I. Bullpen to team up and break down this monumental issue. For this round is Marty Stoked and me (Ken from the ODPH/NI Comics EIC) giving our thoughts on this frightening debut issue.

HOW WAS THE WRITING?

Ken: Williamson wastes no time delivering the terror in the opening portion. Commander has always been ruthless to justify his twisted visions. Dealing with the bar Patron is just the tip of the iceberg at the levels he descends to for his goals.

Once the flashback sequences begin, Williamson teeters on a fine line of trying to make Commander’s cause justifiable. After the accident happens, all notions fa redeemable figure are put to rest. The cunning and scheming ooze from the lips of a dangerous con-man. There is always a sense that he’s working everyone to accomplish a hidden agenda.

After a major bombshell gets dropped, the closing moments factor back into Commander’s unpredictable nature. The plan is set in motion and Williamson unleashes evil onto the masses of the Energon Universe. Great introduction.

Marty: For those unfamiliar with the Energon Universe and GIJoe mythos, Cobra Commander #1 serves as an excellent introduction. Williamson masterfully weaves a tale that explains the backstory and stakes without overwhelming new readers. The issue’s pacing is commendable, thrusting readers into the universe before unfolding essential details. Fans of the series will appreciate subtle references to past events, creating a layered experience that builds anticipation for future issues. The faster-paced narrative keeps readers hooked and eager for the next installment, making this a must-read first issue.

LET’S TALK ART AND LETTERING:

Ken: Milana and Leoni construct an aura of danger with each panel. The patron sequence builds towards a horrific end. The use of Wooten’s lettering to illustrate the horror instead of actually seeing it connects with readers more in my opinion. It’s an excellent case of storytelling using less to deliver more. It also gives a contrast to where the flashback sequence leads.

Commander’s beginning as a scientist escalades emotions and gives a small glimpse into the unbalanced drive of the lead character. After the riot aftermath, the imagery showcases Commander’s craftiness in spinning events into his favor.

This devilish charisma pays off for key moments with the reader (even with THAT reveal). The close sets Commander on a new path and one that fully locks in for the long haul. Great final image to leave off with until next time.

Marty: Milana’s artwork, complemented by Annalisa Leoni’s vibrant colors and Rus Wooton’s dynamic letters, breathes life into the Energon Universe. The cohesive stylistic elements connect seamlessly with previous titles, offering a rewarding experience for loyal readers. Simultaneously, newcomers are treated to a visually striking world filled with advanced technology and captivating designs. The realm of Cobra Commander is a visual feast, reminiscent of Atlantean aesthetics, complete with advanced technology that enhances the overall experience.

The onomatopoeic expressions within the comic enhance the cinematic tone, immersing readers in the unfolding events. This technique amplifies the impact of the narrative, creating a multisensory experience that adds depth to the storytelling. The dual yet bright color palette complements the mysterious realm and its inhabitants, adding an extra layer of visual appeal.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Ken: One of pop culture’s most famous villains gets a spotlight fitting of his legend with this debut issue. From the fear element crafted by Williamson’s writing to the spectacular visuals by Milana, Leonii and Wooten, the faceless eyes of terror strike a chord with new and old readers alike. With storytelling like this, it’s hard not to cheer for the bad guys.

FINAL POINT: 9 out of 10
