The Avengers #9
Writer – Jed MacKay
Color Artist – Federico Blee
Letter – VC’s Cory Petit
The Story:
The Twilight have come for Kang, the only thing standing in their way… Earth’s Mighiest Heroes! It’s a battle to save one of their greatest enemies as The Avengers square off against strangely, evenly matched opponents.
The Writing:
Each Avenger gets a shot at center stage in this issue. Jed MacKay expertly weaves the story between each fight scene with smart comedy that doesn’t take away from the threat of the antagonists. The Twilight Court are delightfully Shakespearean and wholly entertaining. This took me back to Avengers titles of old where a threat would emerge and the team would have to work out a solution on the fly. While each character gets their moment to shine, Iron Man and Vision were the standouts for me in this issue. Iron Man’s interaction with Bedivere was one of my favorite moments with my favorite character in an Avengers book in quite some time.
The Art:
From the design of the Twilight Court to the action set pieces and the brilliant colors, the art team continues to hit this title out of the park! This is the gold standard for superhero comic books, truly excelent!
The Verdict – 9.5/10
With great writing, impeccable art, and a fantastic cliffhanger, The Avengers #9 is a near perfect comic book. I am excited to see where the story goes and I can’t wait to see where MacKay and the rest of the team take this group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes next.
