“It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine” – Michael Stipe

Readers were first exposed to the character in a limited series in 2021. Since that time, fans have been waiting to see more of the unique figure. Word of a new limited series debuting in November 2023 had fans excited. Little did fans know this was going to be the precursor for a much larger movement.

The Writing:
Marty:
GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #2, masterfully crafted by the creative team of Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson, and Rob Leigh, dives deeper into the fallout of the UNKNOWN WAR, propelling protagonist Tariq Geiger into a struggle for survival amidst the remnants of society. The addition of Dr. Molotov’s backstory infuses a rich emotional layer into the narrative, sparking excitement about the evolving dynamics between Geiger and Molotov. The hope for their collaboration in resolving the unknown war adds an intriguing element to the series, leaving readers eager to witness the evolution of their partnership.
The issue adeptly addresses unanswered questions lingering from the first volume, providing a satisfying layer of continuity. The traditional paneling layouts enhance the story’s flow, striking a balance between clarity and complexity. This design choice encourages readers to reflect on past events, fostering a deeper connection to the unfolding narrative. The narrative’s pacing is impeccable, allowing readers to absorb the unfolding events while maintaining an engaging rhythm.
Ken:
The early days of Tariq Geiger’s new stat quo gives readers a deeper understanding not just into his character, but to the “new normal” in the Unnamed Universe. Johns builds the connection of Dr. Molotov and Geiger slowly enough to let readers become fully invested in both. With the common bond of lost family, the pair finds common ground.
Johns crafts it with a feel of reluctant “frienemies”. This builds into Molotov helping Geiger with his rods to control the powers. it’s not so much for his personal kindness. The move is driven more to have Geiger help him find his wife.
Johns brings the looming drama to a boil once the final act begins. The conflict leads to a sense of disappointment and acceptance that the world has changed forever. Johns paces this perfectly.
It leads to an epilogue that gives a greater understanding to how damaged Geiger is and to see how far he’s come once his limited series began. After reading this series, there is no way not to be fully sold on the regular series forthcoming in 2024.
Let’s talk about The Art:
Marty:
The epilogue stands out as a highlight, seamlessly tying in with Junk Yard Joe and offering a unique perspective on the past. Through Joe’s eyes, the interconnected memories provide a captivating glimpse into the intricate web of the story’s world. The artistic execution of these scenes not only captures the essence of a post-war period but also introduces a futuristic and cyborg-inspired visual language.
The art direction throughout the issue is commendable, resonating with the tone of the narrative. The light, old-world feel of the artwork complements the post-war setting, immersing readers in the atmosphere of the story. As we learn more about Dr. Molotov and Tariq, the art serves as a visual anchor, enhancing our understanding of the characters and the world they inhabit.
Ken:
Frank and Anderson paint the landscape of loss and reluctant friendship with this concluding chapter. From the start, the art captures the struggle to deal with the loss of the family for Geiger. Dr. Molotov’s narration leads to his shock and fear of what he has caused. The pairing’s demeanor towards each other reflects the need, not want of the other’s company. The art shows this with Geiger’s standoff reactions and Molotov’s shocked mannerisms.
The conflict is brief but makes its’ mark with the story. The actions taken by both Geiger and Molotov demonstrate their emotions as they encounter the truth they were hoping to avoid. The epilogue gives readers a few noteworthy images before departing from the Unnamed Universe ….for now. It’s a solid finish to the beginning of Ghost Machine’s walking weapon before he leads a new charge in April.
Final Thoughts:
Marty: Overall Grade 8.75 out of 10
GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #2 effectively builds momentum, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the launch of the new Geiger and Ghost Machine series in 2024. The creative synergy between storytelling and artistry makes it a standout installment that not only satisfies current fans but also piques the interest of those eager to see how this captivating narrative unfolds.
