Do not Disturb #2 – Organized crime in the Afterlife

Organized crime runs the Argyle Hotel in Do not Disturb #2 by Jarod Hunter Roe, David Flores, Lorenzo Scaramella & Letter Squids from Invader Comics.

PREVIOUSLY

Private Investigator Randall Hasley was hired by worried parents to find Veronica, their missing daughter. Unfortunately, the leads pointed to the Argyle Hotel. The once prestigious city landmark had seen better days. The Argyle was now riddled with the homeless, the desperate and the illicit activities of the town. Eventually, Randall found Veronica in the worst conditions possible. But before he could even assess the crime scene, Randall was viciously attacked. Unfortunately, Randall was now dead staring at his own body.

THE MYSTERIOUS ARGYLE HOTEL

Do Not Disturb #2 Cover B by Michael Nelsen & David Flores, Invader Comics.

As a result of this revelation, Randall Hasley found himself in the middle of a supernatural murder mystery. It turns out, there’s a sort of limbo afterlife right there inside the premises of the hotel. Randall learns the ins and outs of the Argyle Hotel from a fellow dead detective named Oscar Moran. Or at least everything Oscar knows about this mysterious place. Evidently, everyone in the premises is also dead, different floors of the hotel are stuck in different eras and the most important thing: anyone who walks out the front door never comes back.

DEAD, BUT DETERMINED

Once upon a time, Randall was a formidable cop. But as the years passed, he became jaded, lazy and careless. He lost the motivation to care and because of that he left the police force to be a private investigator. Or at least that’s what he told himself. After dying, Randall had the realization that maybe he never was a good cop. So, determined to prove to himself that he could be a good detective, he decides to solve Veronica’s case. Even after death. Not for the credit, not for the recognition. But for the sake of Veronica. Whose life hangs in the balance.

*SPOILERS FOR ISSUE #2*

THE MAFIA INSIDE THE ARGYLE

Finally, issue #2 brings about a detailed exposition on who is in charge inside the Argyle Hotel. Once again, Oscar is in charge of explaining things to Randall. The big reveal in this issue is the hierarchy structure that runs the Argyle. Mob bosses, goons, muscle and power. Ultimately, Randall will have to navigate these afterlife waters with a lot of caution.

HOW ABOUT THE ART?

If you liked the visual of issue #1, you will absolutely get more of it in issue #2. The Argyle contains many rooms and areas stuck in separate moments in time. As the characters walk from one room to the other David Flores and Lorenzo make sure to highlight the differences with the stylized decorations and motifs in each room. Bringing to life the Argyle Hotel as the huge part it plays into the story.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

FINAL THOUGHTS

The murder mystery takes a back seat to the supernatural elements in this installment. However, the inside structures and power dynamics of the Argyle Hotel are just, if not more, as interesting as the case of Veronica. Randall Hasley is a man on a mission to redeem himself by saving the life of a stranger and preventing her from joining the permanent population of the Argyle Hotel. Do not Disturb is a tale with many twists and turns that keeps you coming back for more.

DC K.O. #5 – The New King

Creative Team – Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Javi Fernandez, Xermanico, Wes Craig, Alejandro Sánchez, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with DC K.O. #4 here!

The Story

This is a joint review from Matt of Hops Geek News and Megan from the Vigilante Vibes Podcast!

Matt – Things have finally come to a head and it is so satisfying seeing Lex Luthor’s victory be so short lived. We see Superman and Darkseid at the height of their powers in a way that has never been done before in the DC Universe. Superman is King Omega and levels up which brings about a fun battle between the two. Snyder does an excellent job bringing in ideas and adding depth without making the story feel too convoluted at any point. The way this story wraps up leaves us a little bit of a teaser for what is coming with the next installment and perks our ears up a bit too.

Cover art by Javi Fernández and Alejandro Sánchez. Published by DC Comics

Megan – In what started with a huge melee made up of some of the most iconic characters of the DC Universe has brought us to the final fight. In the last issue, the winner of the tournament was Lex Luthor, which was a huge surprise. Now, in DC K.O. #5, he’s expected to fight for his crown but that’s not what the focus is of the story. Pieces have been aligning behind the scenes, timelines have been created, and plans have been put into action. Leading up to the biggest fight of the entire event, DC K.O. #5 will keep you on the edge of your seat and will keep your eyes locked into the pages of the comic. Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson leave the story off on an ominous note that has me very excited to see what’s next with the aftermath of the DC K.O. event.

The Art

Matt – I honestly do not know how this art team does it. These splash pages are packed to the brim of action from every angle and the amount of detail in the lines and every zig zag or punch is on there. At no point did any of these sequences lack in detail which blows my mind. The way the colors add in and allow these moments to truly speak for themselves and feel powerful as well shows the love and dedication to the craft that this team has.

MeganDC K.O. #5 has so many things to love about it and the art is at the top of the list. With artists like Javi Fernandez, Xermanico, and Wes Craig on the creative team, you’re guaranteed a lot of gorgeous looks throughout the comic. In the comic, there are some panels that are nothing short of stunning with gorgeous powersets beign on full display and a beautiful mixture of details and abstract art.

Alejandro Sánchez brings a huge amount of vibrancy to the pages of DC K.O. #5, with a great juxtaposition of contrasting colors. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou is able to bring power to the words of the characters, giving the story even more depth. Throughout the comic, you’re reminded time and time again of these artist’s incredible talents while they’re on full display.

Final Thoughts

Matt -10/10 DC K.O. #5 delivers the epic ending capping off an incredible tournament that was full of jaw-dropping moments and clever ideas. The team poured their heart and soul into this and it shows in every single panel.

Megan – 10/10. DC K.O. #5 brings the end of the fantastic event with a very satisfactory ending. Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson knocked this out of the park with the story, and the artists put their talents on full display.

Overall Grade -10/10

ABSOLUTE FLASH #12: Sacrifices

Sacrifices must be made to save the world, and all sacrifices come at a cost, no matter the size. Wally is coming into his own as year one ends; however, it comes at a heavy price. The showdown with Thawne is here, and it’s all hands on deck!

Absolute Flash #12. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Nick Robles.

Creative Team: Jeff Lemire (WRITER), Nick Robles (ART and COVER), A.L. Kaplan (ART), Adriano Lucas (COLORS), and Tom Napolitano (LETTERS).

The Story:

Jeff brings us to the climax of the first year for Wally West, and he caps this issue off with a major bang. There are a lot of pieces and future storylines being put into place that, as one chapter closes, it leaves us hungry for so much more. Grodd meets his father as Wally loses his, as he sacrifices himself, pushing Thawne back into the Speedforce to save his son. It is two incredibly impactful and powerful moments on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. As the dust is settling, I love how the Rogues themselves come back together and become “for hire,” which is leaving them open for more action down the road. I’m excited to continue this journey, and I have become a Wally West fan thanks to Jeff and what he has done here.

The Art and Letters:

The art is, as always, crushing every panel and making this story so electric. The team brings out the vibrancy and makes the most of every panel. There are moments of Wally and Thawne chasing one another down that are detailed so well, that you can feel the rush of the breeze as they zip by. The final scenes with Grodd and his father are heavy. Especially as the letters make the “All men are evil” trope land hard. This artwork has been nothing short of incredible and aids the story in every way.

Final Thoughts:

Absolute Flash #12 is the end of year one for young Wally West, and it ends on such a high note. His first big test is over, and there are many threads and storylines left on the table that I cannot help but be stoked to see what’s next. This is a must read heroes adventure story!

The Digger #2 – A driven Archeologist

The Kid comes face to face with danger in The Digger #2 by T. S. Luther & Sam Gudilin from Invader Comics.

FROM SOLICITATION:

“In 1930s Veracruz Mexico, locals make money guiding academics and scholars through the region. A local Kid has teamed up with the one man the locals stay away from, the man they call “El Excavador”, hoping to earn money for his sick grandmother. As The Digger and The Kid set off toward the ruins, the mess The Digger left behind in Puerto Mexico catches up to them BOTH.” – from Invader Comics

*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ISSUE #2*

The Digger #2 by T. S. Luther & Sam Gudilin from Invader Comics.

JOHN SMITH THE EXCAVATOR

We find out in issue #2 the name of our strange Digger. His name is John Smith. An archaeologist motivated by fame and recognition. During a gala event in a museum, Smith witnessed a colleague praised and recognized for their contributions to the museum. While John was not recognized in the same manner, he was a remarkable archaeologist in his own right. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for him. John Smith determined to reach that level of respect among his peers by any means necessary.

THE EXPEDICTION BEGINS

We pick up with The Kid and the excavator making their way through the jungles of Veracruz. Everything was going well, they covered a lot of ground and were getting closer to the ruins. However they made it into a restricted area and ran into a confrontation with some local workers. The Kid makes a run for it, while The Digger decides to stay and fight them all. This is the exact moment when The Kid realized he was in way over his head.

HOW ABOUT THE ART?

Sam Gudilin’s storytelling is only getting better. We are served with another incredible and stylized depiction of this thrilling story. With another handful of creative techniques like forced perspective, high energy action scenes and horror elements. The Kid comes face to face with an embodiment of danger and that is made palpable through Gudilin’s art.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

It doesn’t take much to create a villain. However, T.S. Luther makes an effort to lay a second dimension on The Digger by providing the character with a driving engine and motivations. While the reader gets to read between the lines how insidious and dangerous John Smith can be. On the other hand, The Kid gets to learn the hard way. Amazing story, highly recommend it.

Exploit #1 – Buying Silence

A conspiracy to silence the media in Exploit #1 Tim Leong, Laura Hudson, Emiliana Pinna, Rebecca Good & Frank Cvetkovic from Mad Cave Studios.

This is a joint review with two of our finest – Eda and Yancy!

FROM SOLICITATION

“Don’t bury the lede. Bury your enemies. Kirby Kuo might be late to her true purpose in life–but no one would call the 30-something journalism intern out of time. When she uncovers a shocking secret about tech billionaire Cole Saxon, Kirby does what she has always wanted to do and publishes it. But the violence and vengeance that follows is like nothing she could have anticipated–pitting Kirby, her agoraphobic roommate, and the writing staff of the defunct magazine RIOT! to bring justice to a world where the rich get what they want without consequence. Exploit is a timely, biting satire of the state of the American tech oligarchy with a pop-punk edge.”

*SPOILERS FOR ISSUE #1*

Exploit #1 Cover B by Veronica Fish, Mad Cave Studios

PRINT IS DYING

Yancy:

In a world very much like ours, printed media is a dying business. Regardless of that gloomy future, working as a journalist is the dream of one Kirby Kuo. At 34 years old she decided to take an internship at the RIOT! Magazine. Late as she may be to start in the business, she is very excited for the opportunity. However, her first pitch meeting went as bad as you can imagine. Not only does Kirby get her pitch turned down, but the magazine itself is going away.

TECH OLIGARCHS

Unfortunately, RIOT! Magazine has a reputation publishing real expose articles. Which in today’s day and age are not very popular with the powers that be. The reason for this corporate buy-out is one Cole Saxon. A tech billionaire who’s looking to absorb media companies to restructure them, strip them of their assets and replace the print with A.I. content. But the worst and most important aspect of the merger, silencing real voices and real journalism.

Eda:

When it comes to the actual story, it feels very poignant for today’s day and age. With the goal seemingly to be taking down a rich boy that’s all for AI, the message seems clear and is one that I love! For anyone that might seem lost and confused in today’s new age of politics and media, this may just be a must read! Writers Tim Leong and Laura Hudson are absolutely in their bag.

HOW ABOUT THE ART?

Yancy: Emiliana Pinna and Rebecca Good bring a sharp and colorful world to life in the background. There’s a real feeling of a vibrant city everywhere Kirby goes in the story. Also, they incorporate a mix of techniques to highlight tension in a room. Or they elevate the statue of a character by breaking panels with their silhouettes. Great use of the medium for storytelling.

Eda: As previously stated, the first thing that intrigues me about “Exploit” was the eye catching cover by Emiliana Pinna & Rebecca Good! The uses of red & purple really made Kirby pop, helped only by her very striking pose. The cover did such a great job at conveying the story about to unfold, and I love that this style was kept the whole way through the book.

OVERALL GRADE: 8/10

FINAL THOUGHTS

Yancy 8/10: Finally, I understand they’re calling this satire in the solicitation. Yet, when life is stranger than fiction, one could say Kirby’s story is taking place in our reality. Since 2024 this sort of corporate mergers and buy-outs have become very public and very messy. Especially the purchasing of news media outlets. I’m not one to speak for writers Tim Leong or Laura Hudson, but I for one appreciate this type of political and social commentary in my comic books. Because no aspect of life is above criticism or satire. Especially the absurd, outrageous and ridiculous actions of the wealthy and powerful. Exploit from Mad Cave Studios is the type of art that pulls peoples heads from the sand.

Eda 9/10: From the eye catching artwork to the fantastic writing with a poignant and punchy message, this is a book anyone should be reading right now! I’m beyond excited to see where this leads.

BATMAN #7 – Meeting The Patient

Creative Team – Matt Fraction, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, Clayton Cowles

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with Batman #6 here!

The Story

The thrilling story of Batman continues when he gets a message relayed to him that his presence is wanted at Arkham Towers. The person he goes to see isn’t supposed to be able to have any contact with the outside world. The only people Patient Ten is supposed to have contact with is Dr. Zeller, who’s his therapist and doctor.

Cover art by Jorge Jiménez. Published by DC Comics

Going into Room Ten, Batman gets a full look at Patient Ten, who is actually the Joker. It’s clear Joker has been through many medical procedures and tests, but the question is if he’s the same Joker or not. Does he remember everything he’s done? What’s his angle?

With a looming feeling of manipulation, Batman has no reason to trust anything Joker says. Until the Joker says he has a warning, but not for Batman, for Bruce.

Matt Fraction continues to make this run better and better with every issue. Fraction absolutely nailed the heavy tension in the conversation between Batman and Joker, which I loved. You can feel the Joker being up to his old ways in the way he got the message to Batman, but it’s unclear exactly how much he’s changed given his current condition. I’m really looking forward to what’s next because this issue is the start of something big and if it’s anything like this run, it’ll be fantastic.

The Art

Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles put their talents on full display in Batman #7. Jiménez brought so much depth to the pages with his incredible detailing work. The panels with the Joker were absolutely chilling, which added a lot of depth.

Morey was able to bring so much vibrancy to the panels, even though it mostly took place in a hospital room. I really loved the juxtaposition of the Joker’s green to Batman’s blue. It was nothing short of stunning. Clayton Cowles nailed the intensity between Batman and Joker through their dialogue, establishing the emotions of the story with ease. Once again, the artists did a fantastic job and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Final Thoughts

Batman continues to get better and better, bringing more depth and more excitement to the story. Bringing in the Joker in such a chilling way was handled perfectly by the creative team.

Overall Grade – 9/10

YOUNG SHERLOCK REVIEW – Reinventing the Wheel

Amazon MGM Studios is releasing all 8 episodes of Young Sherlock on Prime Video, and it brings a new modern energy to the classic and iconic character of Sherlock Holmes.

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

Here are my thoughts on the newest interpretation of Sherlock Holmes.

Into the Story

Pulling from the Young Sherlock Holmes young adult book series by Andrew Lane, this is unlike any live-action Sherlock fans have seen before. In Young Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes, who is played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, isn’t quite the sharp, polished detective fans are used to. This version shows him as a 19-year-old student at Oxford, where his curiosity often gets him into trouble thanks to a bit of youthful recklessness. The series also stars Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes, and Ralph Fiennes as the Holmes brothers’ father, and Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes.

What immediately grabs your attention is the fantastic chemistry between the characters, namely James Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes. There’s a young and energetic feeling to the show and the characters, although the classic cockiness of Sherlock is very much present.

Young Sherlock starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Image by Amazon MGM Studios.

But where did James and Sherlock’s friendship start? It actually happens when a murder takes place at Oxford, and takes the show by storm. What’s interesting about this version of Moriarty is that he doesn’t have that villainous tone that comes as a package deal with the character. While he’s clearly very intelligent, that doesn’t mean he’s new to breaking the rules or going against authority. This playful rule-breaker of a character works wonderfully off of Sherlock’s character, so much so that they become fast friends and Moriarty feels like apart of the Holmes family. But of course, the harder you fall, the harder the crash. When he eventually turns to the dark side, it hits harder than expected.

The murder at Oxford is what kicks off the the big mystery of the show, but the mystery expands to great lengths, which was done in a great pace in the 8 episodes. As the cast grows in numbers, with characters like Sherlocks family members or characters from the Holmes’ past, the show really starts to take off and you’ll find yourself quickly clicking to the next episode.

Trying Something Different

There’s quite a bit packed into the show, and the pacing is what sets it apart from the other live-action Sherlock Holmes projects. Like other Sherlock shows, usually it’s an episodic format, but this is one constant story from beginning to end. It’s not a “monster of the week” type of thing, which I feel worked extremely well for the show.

Young Sherlock starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Image by Amazon MGM Studios.

The pacing perfectly fits the story and brings a heightened energetic feeling to the show. What becomes very clear in the show is the style of Guy Richie that shows excellently in the show. Of course, with any Guy Ritchie project, it’s packed with splendid action scenes and quick-witted dialogue. The constant moving camera work that we all know and love is a classic Guy Ritchie move that makes you feel apart of the chaos.

Final Thoughts

While you may be asking yourself “another Sherlock Holmes project?”, I promise you it’s anything but. It’s very different from what we’ve seen before and Hero Fiennes Tiffin brings something new to the character. He’s not as cold or distant as Benedict Cumberbatch or as eager to fight as Robert Downey Jr.’s interpretation, but instead he’s very likeable immediately, and that doesn’t change as the show goes on. Hero Fiennes Tiffin takes on the role of Sherlock with all the poise you’d expect, but he smartly strips the character back to his roots. This interpretation feels naturally gifted and endlessly curious, full of sharp intelligence and surprises, yet still a little rough around the edges. He’s not totally in control of his emotions, and he’s clearly less seasoned when it comes to cracking the big mysteries. Paired with direction from Guy Ritchie and backed by a standout supporting cast, this is easily one of my favorite adaptations of this iconic character.

All in all, Young Sherlock feels like a smart, creative spin on a classic. It holds on to what I love about the original stories while confidently trying new things and reshaping the characters in very interesting ways. Guy Ritchie proves, yet again, that he’s the right man for the job when it comes to Sherlock Holmes. In the end, Young Sherlock really captured the essence of what makes Sherlock Holmes such a well-loved character while adding new factors that make the story and the characters feel fresh and new.

Be sure to check out the first season of Young Sherlock only on Prime Video starting March 4, 2026!

The Warden #3: Urban Legend

Crime still runs rampant in Detroit. But there is hope as a masked vigilante has made their presence known. Where will this vigilante show up next, or is it just an urban legend…?

Creative Team

David Timm Jr. & Cody Karamol (Writers), Matthieu Pereira (Artist/Cover), Roman Stevens (Colorist),
Jimmy Greenhalgh (Letterer)

Publisher: IronClad Comics

Urban Legend

Issue three of this amazing new comic series from IronClad Comics takes you on a wild ride of multiple crimes that have been interrupted by Detroit’s new vigilante. This new vigilante is causing such a ruckus that federal authorities are now stepping in to stop this individual.

urban legend
The Warden #3, Credit IronClad Comics. Cover by Matthieu Pereira

The actions of this vigilante are generating mixed emotions from citizens and police officers within the city. Some believe that the vigilante is doing a good service for the city. Others despise the vigilante and want to see them apprehended. The feel for this third issue is that of Batman. Masked individual who only comes out at night to fight off criminals of the city. Starting the rumor of an urban legend…

Midway through this issue, you catch up with Henry (the main character), who is visiting his priest. Not in a confessional, from issue two, rather face-to-face in the priest’s office. This is where you, the reader, fully grasp who the vigilante is. And within this section of the story, the feel makes a transition. This story goes from a Batman feel to a Daredevil feel in a matter of pages.

The priest talks to Henry about his actions and the implications of them are doing to the city. Henry understands but has a feeling of “duty” to the city because he is able to do what no mere human can. This is the part of the story that we learn Henry has accepted the fact that he has abilities. Abilities that he has buried deep inside for too long, and he can’t anymore.

The end of this issue focuses on the relationship between Matt and Emma. At the beginning of this series, I thought of them as the “power couple,” but now I am not so sure. Emma has been distant from Matt recently as she works on her story about the vigilante. Which is making Matt’s job more difficult because of the extent she is willing to go for this story. Tempers flare, and our power couple seems to dissolve right before our eyes.

The Writing

David Timm Jr. & Cody Karamol are showing their creative writing skills within this issue. Bringing in the undertone of Batman and Daredevil symbolism is an utter joy to see as a fan of those two characters. The emotional impacts of the dialogue between Henry and the priest, as well as Matt and Emma is so well done. You feel the distress coming off the panels! This issue is so captivating, gripping your attention page after page.

The Artwork

Matthieu Pereira continues to do fabulous work on this series! One of the majestic details that caught my eye was an inside look at Henry’s locker at work. All of the equipment was so detailed, including the one book in the locker, The Hobbit. Matthieu keeps his rough and gritty style throughout, which plays perfectly with the tone of this story.

Roman Stevens keeps bringing the fire for this series with his coloration. Filling in the work of Matthieu to bring to life the panels and finer details for the reader to take notice. His use of shading to bring forth the raw emotions of the characters is flattering to the eyes.

Jimmy Greenhalgh provides another phenomenal job with the lettering for this issue. Perfect placement and sizing. Even adding bold lettering to emphasize emotional tone within the dialogue.

My Thoughts

Issue three of The Warden may be my favorite issue yet. Some may think that my bias for Batman and Daredevil sways this decision, but that would be false. This issue provides so much information about Henry and his beliefs about his decision to do what he is doing. This is the issue where the pace of the story starts to pick up. Issue four of this series is almost completed and ready for sale. Please help and support IronClad Comics on Kickstarter. Follow the link below to purchase issues one through three now!

ROUTINE – Survival Game Review

0

Developed by Lunar Software

Published by Raw Fury

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

Into the game

ROUTINE puts you in the shoes of a lone engineer as you awaken from some strange nightmares after having been isolated for 7 days upon arrival, alone and not being able to find anyone else. You are contracted to help debug and fix the core A.S.N systems in and around the Union Plaza lunar base on The Moon. Stuck inside this 80’s sci-fi themed tourism and vacation resort of sorts as you run, hide, and try to find out the truth of what really happened to everyone aboard. Creeping through the abandoned decrepit mall, to the hauntingly empty living quarters and some other places best not spoiled here for your own enjoyment.

Art by Routine. Developed by Lunar Software

The atmosphere of this game is truly top notch, from every little creak of metal, to even your own breathing and footsteps the sound design was knocked out of the park. The dark gritty visuals contrasting sometimes with its brighter color pallets leaving you with the impression that this was once a place full of life and people, while still being very reminiscent of Alien Isolation in the best ways possible. This game really sells you on the fact that you are alone with no one coming to help you while having that dark pit in your stomach knowing that something is watching you every step of the way. And “something” definitely is hunting you, the game does an astounding job at using your own imagination against you particularly through noise. The few voices we get to hear whether through audio logs found by exploring or from the automated announcement system are quite good and enthralling really keeping you hooked into this terrifying world you walk through.

Final Thoughts

ROUTINE is an incredible game that has its place among the horror greats. A truly spine chilling and vexing master class of horror and it makes me very excited to see more games from Lunar Software in the future. Its a beautifully terrifying game and you should definitely play it if you love horror!
Overall I give it a 9/10!

Overall Grade – 9/10
