Into the game

ROUTINE puts you in the shoes of a lone engineer as you awaken from some strange nightmares after having been isolated for 7 days upon arrival, alone and not being able to find anyone else. You are contracted to help debug and fix the core A.S.N systems in and around the Union Plaza lunar base on The Moon. Stuck inside this 80’s sci-fi themed tourism and vacation resort of sorts as you run, hide, and try to find out the truth of what really happened to everyone aboard. Creeping through the abandoned decrepit mall, to the hauntingly empty living quarters and some other places best not spoiled here for your own enjoyment.

The atmosphere of this game is truly top notch, from every little creak of metal, to even your own breathing and footsteps the sound design was knocked out of the park. The dark gritty visuals contrasting sometimes with its brighter color pallets leaving you with the impression that this was once a place full of life and people, while still being very reminiscent of Alien Isolation in the best ways possible. This game really sells you on the fact that you are alone with no one coming to help you while having that dark pit in your stomach knowing that something is watching you every step of the way. And “something” definitely is hunting you, the game does an astounding job at using your own imagination against you particularly through noise. The few voices we get to hear whether through audio logs found by exploring or from the automated announcement system are quite good and enthralling really keeping you hooked into this terrifying world you walk through.

Final Thoughts

ROUTINE is an incredible game that has its place among the horror greats. A truly spine chilling and vexing master class of horror and it makes me very excited to see more games from Lunar Software in the future. Its a beautifully terrifying game and you should definitely play it if you love horror!
