Catch up with Batman #5!

The Story

After what one can only describe as a disastrous date, Bruce and Annika sit on the back of an ambulance in an awkward silence. She just learned that Damien, AKA Robin, is Bruce’s son, which now can put her in even more danger than she already was. What’s interesting is that she didn’t piece together that Bruce is Batman, who she seems to take displeasure with as she says he solves all of his problems with violence. This is just the cherry on top of a never-ending night for Bruce.

What Bruce doesn’t realize is that Hugo Strange is up to more hijinx than realized as Hugo says that he plans to prove that the only person that Gotham should fear is him. Putting his Monster Men to work, he forces Bruce’s hand to get involved to save a woman who’s in the facility they’re attacking.

It’s one thing after another for Bruce, and it doesn’t seem that it’ll die down any time soon. Behind the excitement of the story is Matt Fraction, the writer of Batman. Fraction is able to create issue after issue that has excellent continuity while adding in new factors that drive the anticipation. With the cliffhanger Batman #6 ended on, the anticipation is very high for the next issue.

The Art

The artwork of Batman has been top quality, and the sixth issue isn’t an exception thanks to Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles. Jiménez is able to capture the mysterious darkness that comes with Batman when he patrols the city or fights crime. In this issue, his fight against the Monster Men illustrates the power Batman has and uses against the monsters. The monsters, who look look as monsters should, messy and terrifying, perfectly juxtapose Batman’s sleek suit. Complementing Jiménez’s drawing perfectly is Morey’s excellent use of colors. Bringing an all new depth to the pages, Morey expertly captures the essence of the Dark Knight through darker colors and bright blues to work off his suit.

Final Thoughts

This Batman run gets better and better and easily pulls you into the different stories happening in the comic. The creative team nails it once again with the sixth issue!
