The Story

In the last issue of Batman, Bruce asked Dr. Annika Zeller on what she thought was a date. Surely this can’t be a date when it starts off with a high speed chase from a group of sword-handling ninjas following Bruce and Annika. But why would they be on the pursuit of the couple? Well, it’s all because of Annika’s invention, Crown of Storms, that has brought a bounty to be put on her head.

Bruce, proving he is the smoothest date out there, shows off his impressive driving by losing the ninjas, who are actually the 000 Gang. However, their excitement doesn’t end there as they’re followed by another villain who’s after Annika, The Ojo. It looks to be the wildest date anyone could ask for, with danger at every turn.

Matt Fraction does a brilliant job with keeping the energy high, while having some humorous dialogue between Bruce and Annika. With Bruce expertly fighting off every threat that comes Annika’s way, it seems she’s right on the cusp of finding out his alternate identity, especially with the cliffhanger we were left on. Either way it goes, I’m very excited to see what Fraction gives us next, because if it’s like everything else this series has given us, it’ll be fantastic.

The Art

Jorge Jiménez’s talent shines very brightly in Batman #5, especially in the action-heavy panels. Jiménez perfectly illustrates the excitement of the fight scenes, making you feel like you’re right in the middle of it all. Tomeu Morey brings even more depth to these panels with their work in the coloring, having a beautiful juxtaposition of darker colors with vibrant ones.

Wrapping up the incredible artwork with a tidy bow is Clayton Cowles, who handles the lettering. With having the ability to harness Bruce’s smooth talking with Annika’s confusion to the whole situation, you get a really good idea of the differing tones throughout the comic through the dialogue. All in all, the artists knocked it out of the park once again!

Final Thoughts

Another excellent issue in the Batman series all thanks to the creative team! Matt Fraction just doesn’t miss and Batman #5 proves that!
