“Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” Swims Past The Goal But Has Heart

0

In a rush of new animation, DreamWorks Animation returns to the competition in a brand new film, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken. The story centers on a young teenage kraken, Ruby, whose family resides in Oceanside as they attempt to blend in with the rest of the humans. In an attempt to fit in, Ruby accidentally discovers that she is kraken royalty and that her family helped defeat the ruthless and power hungry mermaids in a battle from long ago. Rather than let the rivalry continue, she attempts to mend the relationship between krakens and mermaids…but at what cost?

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken can be best described as DreamWorks’ attempt at throwing their hat into the ring when it comes to films focused on generational trauma. At the same time, it manages to pull in the essences of Pixar’s Turning Red and Luca, with similar themes and plot devices used to push the story along. And while the film puts effort into creating something unique, it comes off a bit flat and predictable. Many of the relationships showcased become exactly what we expect as the audience and while predictability isn’t a bad thing, it doesn’t really benefit the film overall. There isn’t much that leads you on path only to unveil the great twist that is intended to make you at least somewhat surprised.

Throughout the film, there are attempts to tackle the topic of generational trauma, but it almost becomes a forgotten theme that is barely touched upon. If anything, it comes across more of a story that discusses a teenager simply trying to be a teenager while discovering royal powers by happenstance. There isn’t much emotional depth that is brought to the relationships amongst the family, and perhaps, that is for the best. For a film that is clearly written for younger audiences with very few genuinely good jokes and decent moments for adults, it might be best to leave the generational trauma trope to those who understand it.

However, some of the better moments within the film put an emphasis on the concept of honesty between parents and children. It’s a constant storyline that is seen in films where parents will omit information from their children as a form of protection. But as to be expected, this only encourages them to break rules or seek out information that won’t be given to them. This is seen heavily in the relationship between Ruby and her mother, and it’s something that deserves discussion as something that does happen often between parents and their children. Given that the film is very much intended for younger audiences, the way this concept is relayed is simplified but still very well-explained and portrayed throughout the film.

Visually, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken can be stunning at times. There’s a mild use of 2D animation that is scattered across the film but ends up being severely underused. With 2D animation becoming more scarce, it would have been delightful to see a better use of the animation style as a way to enhance the storytelling overall. That isn’t to say the rest of the film isn’t vibrant or fun to look at. There are various moments that are vibrant and colorful, particularly when the film takes us around Oceanside which is perfectly designed as the ideal cozy, seaside town.

As far as animated films go, this isn’t exactly DreamWorks’ best work so far, and feels far more predictable than expected and not in the best way. There are themes that are handled well and some that would have been better left alone. However, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken provides enjoyable animation in various moments that is pleasing to the eyes. For a film that is directed primarily toward younger audiences, I highly recommend taking kids to see this fun and adventurous movie. And if you love animation or DreamWorks, give this one a shot. While it misses the mark at some points, there is still some heart that is to be found in a movie like this.

“The Perfect Find” Is The Perfect Comfort Watch!

0

Romantic comedies are a genre full of comfort and hope, and Netflix’s The Perfect Find is no exception. The film is based on the book of the same name by Tia Williams and centers on Jenna Jones, a 40-year-old woman whose career hangs in the balance. Not only does she make a career change into beauty journalism but she finds herself working for Darcy, her rival in the industry and in life, while also engaging in an expected romance with her new boss’ son, Eric. The film stars Gabrielle Union, Keith Powers, Gina Torres, Alani Anthony, and Aisha Hinds.

With so many blockbuster franchise films out in the open this summer, The Perfect Find is a rather simple film about a complicated yet comedic situation. In fact, it’s a movie that allows you to escape the worries of the world and the stress of trying to keep up with other genres that are trying to outdo one another. Its story remains straightforward, and while it dips into the world of beauty journalism, it remains focused on our main characters. It feels very much like a fantasy or daydream of how someone would meet “the one”, and that’s not a bad thing either. At times, the film can come across incredibly corny with moments that feel a little too on-the-nose. But perhaps that’s the reality of how some relationships start off. They can be full of corny little moments that transpire into something serious and real, as we see between our two love interests.

(l-r) Gabrielle Union as Jenna, Alani Anthony as Elodie, and Aisha Hinds as Billie in Netflix’s “THE PERFECT FIND”. All Rights Reserved by Netflix.

There are certain types of stories that we rarely get to see, especially when it comes to women approaching their 40’s and onward. And the beauty of The Perfect Find is that it begins at a point where “happily ever after” has ended for our main character and she must start with a clean slate. Through the narrative of Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union), we get to see life through a middle-aged woman trying to get her career stabilized. All the while, she’s also allowing herself to indulge in love, even if it is with someone much younger than her. The film not only discusses what it means to maintain focus on being a career-oriented woman, but also dives into the idea of women being women and living the life that they want. It’s not often that we get to see women, especially Black women, be the focus of a story that is simply about living life like any ordinary person.

(l-r) Keith Powers and Gabrielle Union as Eric and Jenna in Netflix’s “THE PERFECT FIND”. All Rights Reserved by Netflix.

What’s even more interesting is being able to see generational differences between Jenna and Eric (Keith Powers), each of whom appear to be presented as an older millennial and part of Gen Z. Even as they develop genuine feelings for one another, there is not only a difference in maturity level but a difference in how they each see the world. It’s far easier to pit generations against each other and each side thinks they’re better. But it’s a challenge to reject that mentality and instead, come together to form bonds that go above and beyond generational differences that mean next to nothing.

Performance-wise, Keith Powers stands out the most as someone who is very much representative of Eric’s generation and their mentality. Not only does Eric showcase an immense amount of passion for the work he does, but he has the same level of affection toward Jenna as he opens up to her. Powers manages to bring an engaging performance to the character that keeps us interested while validating all reasons as to why he’s perfect for Jenna.

Gina Torres as Darcy in Netflix’s “THE PERFECT FIND”. All Rights Reserved by Netflix.

Meanwhile, Gabrielle Union is as radiant as ever as Jenna as she gives off an independent performance to mirror the mentality of Jenna. But Union also lets go to allow the vulnerability of the character to seep through and as the walls come down. Unfortunately, while Gina Torres does give as good a performance, she is severely underused. As the big boss and mother to Jenna and Eric respectively, I would have hoped to see Darcy have more of an impact on the main plot.

Ultimately, The Perfect Find is a movie that proves we need more romantic comedies that feature people of color that are opposite each other. We can be funny. We can be romantic. We can be completely nuts. We can be tender. The strengths of this film tend to outshine most flaws to where it becomes a comforting movie to watch. If you’re not into romantic comedies or feel like they’re just not for you, turn away now. But if you’re looking to get into the genre or you absolutely love stories like this, then grab your favorite snacks and drinks, grab a blanket, and watch away.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 brings the dark humor and frightening terror fans for this brand have come to know and love. Let’s take a closer look at this issue, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

And before we get into the review, check out this amazing variant cover by the one and only KIT WALLIS! GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 – CREATIVE: Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz (Credit: Source Point Press/Top Hat Studios)

Haiden, his sister Gabby, girlfriend Haley and Liz started the day together at the beach. However returning home has been the trip from Hell. When their car breaks down, an elderly stranger named Hazel offers help and shelter for a dark night. The group soon finds out that help is hiding an even darker secret. The body count starts to rise as Hazel reveals her true form.

With Haley and Liz not making it through the night, Haiden and Gabby are on their own. That is until FURY-CHAN, NIGHT MOON, DOC X, BLOOD SPARROW, SHADOW AXE & 2TON aka THE D.E.A.D. SQUAD arrive to …..help?

LOOKING FOR MORE COMIC TALK?

This issue picks up from the “dramatic superhero” entrance where 2TON takes a metal star to the forehead. Gabby is unimpressed by the “heroes” and plots to escape. Those plans are halted when the squad reveals plans to stop Hazel once and for all. A journal of events is presented chronicling Hazel’s history (as they know it).

GRANDMA CHAINSAW
GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 – CREATIVE: Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz (Credit: Source Point Press/Top Hat Studios)

Readers witness what she’s been doing this entire time and what she is capable of. Gabby is still ready to go but Haiden talks her into staying and seeing the squad plan through. All the while, Hazel is knitting and patiently waiting for the night’s new visitors.

CREED IS BACK FOR ANOTHER ROUND!

How does the plan go? Readers tag along for the action as the group enters Hazel’s house. What dangers lie ahead? Are they up to the challenge? Will everyone get out alive…..probably not. What will everyone get instead? An exciting read with gruesome kills and more mysteries unfolding at each turn.

The danger keeps escalading as some continue to move through the house, until the last page. The final moments leave more questions than answers but that’s a huge win for readers that the story is far from over.

DIVING DEEPER INTO THE TERROR

BREAKDOWN: Radford and Dunford skillfully master balancing the horror and humor for this issue. The D.E.A.D. Squad is as ridiculous as it sounds, yet, they provide well-timed humor into the dark tale. Clearly, they are not ready for this job and it’s only a matter of time till their LARPing catches up with them. The banter between them and Gabby’s rationalization makes for the enjoyable break between the terror.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW
GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 – CREATIVE: Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz (Credit: Source Point Press/Top Hat Studios)

Excellent full-page breakdown of Hazel to give a closer look at what she’s about without revealing everything. Hearing it through the Squad’s voice added a nice layer to the story. Is it true or completely off-base? Only the reader will decide.

ZOMBIES! SUPER HEROES! LET’S GO

The story plays into the classic Horror Movie build and never feels forced or rushed for shock. Solid ending to this issue to continue the mystery for another round. There’s much for Horror readers to enjoy with this tale.

As with every great Horror story, readers measure it by the kills. Balondo and Smith bring the OMG to a few noteworthy characters. One that will no doubt have fans talking involves an air tank. No spoilers but you know the team had fun creating that visual (even Lentz writing the “Boop! :-)”.

LOCAL MAN STRIKES AGAIN!

Balondo constructs the eerie feel of the panels building small then leading into bigger and even full page visuals. One standout page is the group shot with a mysterious figure lurking in a doorway. Another is the creative way to say “Part Two” mixed in the background.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW
GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 – CREATIVE: Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz (Credit: Source Point Press/Top Hat Studios)

The little touches of detail add more apprehension for the group’s travel leading to the ominous closing visual. It’s another smash success.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Top Hat Studios plays to their strengths to give fans another smash fusion of horror and humor. Taking Radford and Dunford’s lead with doubling down on classic set-ups and timely banter, Balondo, Smith and Lentz run with striking visuals of the unlikely survivors’ plight to avoid being the next on Hazel’s “Eat, Slay, Love” diet.

Time is running out on the Horus in Hell project (where you can add this issue onto so don’t delay – sign up now)! Hit me up on ODPH social media and let me know what you thought of Grandma Chainsaw #2! Thanks for reading!

Pocus and Emily journeyed to hell to fix the mess they had created. Upon their arrival, Emily realizes that she’s glowing, which they assume is due to the fact that she still has a soul. Pocus takes the opportunity to crack a quick joke after feeding a random stray cat.

While in hell, Pocus‘ powers become far stronger than before. However, they soon find themselves in danger when two demons take notice of Emily’s fresh soul. Despite their assumptions that she is a helpless human, Emily proves to be a formidable opponent, and the demons’ attempt to take her soul fails.

During this encounter, Pocus and Emily discover something else. Demon blood covers the glow of Emily’s soul, providing her with a disguise. However, Emily is not thrilled about this new disguise as it quickly fails.

Just as Pocus and Emily are preparing to meet their maker, the stray cat they fed earlier dispatches the demons. The cat thanks them for the food and is on his way. Finally, Pocus and Emily find the demon they came to see, or rather, he finds them.

Indie Comics and Why They’re Important

0

Comic books are one of the most popular forms of media in the world. With all the movies, TV shows, and video games being made, it seems almost impossible to start a comic book company. Marvel and DC have a head start of over 80 years and have established characters that people love and adore. To create a comic book company, you would need to work ten times as hard just to get the slightest bit of attention. Some may look at this challenge and accept defeat, while others have rolled up their sleeves and are ready to fight.

Breyden Boyd and Anthony Carranza started a comic company known as Shape Comics. The company is named after their debut character, Shape-Man, and is heavily inspired by classic comic books. Both Boyd and Carranza draw with a retro art style and tell classic stories like “The Calico Kid,” an old western, and more recently “Sonic Saturn,” which is an outer space adventure.

“Shape Comics is really just me and Anthony. We’re two guys who are total nerds, making comic books together,” said Boyd. “We met through Instagram and realized that we both had a similar vibe and love for the retro comic book style. We also shared similar goals, and it got to the point where we could publish our own comic books.”

On November 24, 2020, Boyd started a TikTok series where he would redraw superheroes he made up as a child. The series was popular from the first video, and as he kept uploading, commenters would ask for more. Understanding what the fans wanted, Boyd published his first comic, “Shape-Man,” on November 3, 2021.

Since then, Boyd has teamed up with Carranza to create two more “Shape-Man” comics, “The Calico Kid” series, and a new story called “Sonic Saturn.”

“I think one of the most enjoyable parts of what we are doing is the fact that we are trying to bring a breath of fresh air to the comic book industry,” said Carranza. “Most of the market is saturated with public domain characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, which is great, but it’s always nice to add a little something more, especially to the genre of superheroes.”

Shape Comics is just one of many independent comic book companies dedicated to creating great stories. However, if you truly want to compete with Marvel and DC, you need to reach their level with video games, movies, apps, and more. That’s exactly what Brent Trayce Sands aims to do with his indie comic company, Impound Comics.

Impound Comics is a comic book company based in Sacramento, CA. Their breakout anti-hero, Impound, is an MMA fighter and tow truck driver who gains superpowers. Sands got the inspiration to create him after watching “Black Panther.” After writing his first comic book, he promoted it as “Sacramento’s first superhero!” This caught the attention of the management of the Sacramento Kings, who later offered Sands a spot in their shopping center for an Impound Comics store.

“We had engine behind us during our launch,” said Sands. “The news, the shopping center, people who knew me. I was a promoter, so I was good at getting the word out. We had a lot of support from the start. On our first day, we had a line outside.”

Today, Impound Comics is expanding into other areas besides comics. They have an anime series featuring the character Impound, and there is a mobile game available on the app store.

“I had to look at myself as a comic book consumer,” said Sands. “I didn’t have a wall of comic books, and I wasn’t diving into every new issue when it came out. My experience was more focused on TV shows and games. I was a casual fan. I believe the bigger audience is like that.”

Impound Comics aims to create stories not just for comic fans, but for everyone. Although Sands is branching out, he is still staying true to the roots of where it all started—comics. Impound is about to release the first couple of issues in a graphic novel.

Comic books are a fun way to tell stories and bring people together. Shape Comics wants to bring out the best of what comics can be, while Impound Comics wants to get more people involved. Unlike big companies like Marvel and DC, independent comics are driven by love and passion for their work.

“I think the absolute best part about making comic books is the process of formulating and world-building that comes from establishing an original intellectual property,” said Carranza. “Studying the history that your work is based on and all that planning is the most fun for me.”

STARSTORM #2 – THE LATEST SUPERHERO UNIVERSE EXPANDS ITS’ REACH

THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by IMAGE COMICS

STARSTORM
THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by IMAGE COMICS

CREATIVE TEAM: Drew Craig and Jason Finestone

Welcome to an all-new addition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re following the next chapter from a brand-new series from Image Comics that more people need to be talking about. THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone debut mixing in elements of the Jack Kirby style of storytelling with modern superhero themes.

With all the groundwork being laid last issue, the future looks very bright for this series. Let’s take a closer look and see how things pan out in the second issue, shall we?

CHECK OUT ROGUE SUN!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Grant Garrison isn’t your average high school student. After being found lost with amnesia, Garrison takes a shot trying to fit in. All the while, there are forces from outside of Earth looking for a weapon known as “Sharsrum”, which could spell doom for the entire universe.

During the day of school, the normal drama is cut short after a meteor crashes into Kirby High school. Garrison wakes up to find he’s survived the crash with Jen, a fellow student. Everyone else has gone away. In it’s wake, an unknown creature stands.

STARSTORM
THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by IMAGE COMICS

Garrison seems unready for what’s next, but he bonds with an object, he transforms into something more than human. After defeating the creature, Grant finds out it was Principal Murray. With a mystery unfolding and dangerous figures on the hunt, Grant’s life will never be the same.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

The next chapter kicks off with a recap of previous events. Readers find out that those involved have various levels of changes if they survived. Grant and Jen attend the mass burial for those who didn’t survive the meteor attack.

During the ceremony, the pair notice someone with a bodyguard walking around. She is revealed to be Angela Rizni, daughter of Don Rizni from the Techno Mafia. Angela is ushered away by her Uncle and isolated from her friends.

DON’T MISS HORUS IN HELL!

At her home (under his protection), Angela escapes to clear her head. Someone else with the same idea is Starstrom, who crosses paths with her. All the while, something else is unfolding.

Something ….Supernatural.

Readers find out that something has triggered ZOMBIES to come up from the ground! What or who caused this? Can Starstorm handle another threat? Things move pretty fast as events play out. The final moments give a few things to ponder as it seems that Starstorm might be just the start of powered beings in this universe.

STARSTORM
THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by IMAGE COMICS

MORE FANTASY ADVENTURE!

BREAKDOWN: Craig mixes a few things into the overall picture that create a fun, but at times confusing story. Kudos on mixing in a famous line from “The Crow.” Angela’s plotline involving her friends seemed sudden in their reveals.

Instead of diving in more to Starstorm’s own beginning, the addition of more powered characters takes away that connecting time but leaves the door open for expanding on a universe. Being only two issues in, there is still much clouded in suspense.

VINTAGE STORYTELLING MADE MODERN

Craig never loses the superhero elements that shined in the first issue. The throwback feel still works, even with all the new names involved.

The zombie portion of the book was a fun mix and something unexpected. Events moved at a brisk pace but with such a bigger cast now, where things head now is literally anyone’s guess following the final page.

HORROR FINDS A HOME!

STARSTORM
THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by IMAGE COMICS

The introduction of the Digital mafia was a solid display, giving enough but not diving in too much. The same can be said for the flashbacks of Angela’s parents. Craig gives a brief but effective origin to Angela. The interactions with Grant came off well and readers can easily pick up on the friendship forming.

The zombies really popped off the panels with a subtle retro feel to them. The faceoff with Angela and her uncle stands out as well with the expressions showing the shift in their stat quo. The final full page panel looks to be one readers will remember as a possible start to growing an already budding universe.

FINAL POINT: 7.5 OUT OF 10

The saga of Starstorm dips away from focusing on the main character to introduce some possible major players into the mix. Readers will enjoy the throwback feel of this story as it combines many elements with its’ blossoming origin.

Craig and Finestone bring the always fun dynamic of zombies into the fold as the gear shift will be entertaining to fans that enjoy the superhero genre.

Disney’s “World’s Best” Will Heal Your Soul In More Ways Than One

0

It is officially time for people to wake up to the sounds of fun times and much needed healing found in original movies released on Disney+. The new film, World’s Best released on June 23, and follows Prem Patel (Manny Magnus), a math genius in middle school who discovers that his deceased father was an underground rapper. As he learns more about him, Prem begins to imagine his father being in the room with him, talking to him, and begins a journey of self-discovery and healing from a loss that was never fully addressed by Prem or his mother.

World’s Best comes across as an average film made for tweens and young adults, but beneath the surface, it holds a lot of weight in the themes it discusses. Over the last few years, Disney has done a phenomenal job of creating stories that  discuss subjects like grief, generational trauma, the concept of incomplete families, validation from others, and self-acceptance. This film in particular brings most of these elements together and lays them out across the full runtime before addressing these issues and allowing for a moment of healing and growth to unfold.

For example, in the film, the absence of Prem’s father is rarely, if not ever discussed. But as soon as his imagination begins to run wild, he creates an image of what he thinks his father was like. It is that same imagination that allows him to develop a new passion in hip-hop music and dance his love of math. On the other hand, due to Prem’s desire to obtain a certain level of skill in the art of hip-hop as well as validity and acceptance, he encounters several situations that lead to embarrassing yet equally humbling moments. Again, it’s through his imagination that he’s able to create a system of integrity to abide by that he believes his own father would have followed.

Utkarsh Ambudkar as Suresh Patel and Manny Magnus as Prem Patel in the original Disney+ film, “WORLD’S BEST”. All Rights Reserved By Walt Disney Studios.

Not only do we see this set up with Prem, but we also see it heavily within the relationship he has with his mother who hasn’t quite gone past the grieving stage. While the relationship isn’t strained beyond repair, it becomes clear very quickly that there is a great deal of work needed on both sides to effectively heal the family. And while that is a difficult task, it’s comforting to see that the film takes a new route that leads to moments of genuine compromise and understanding. So much of the film’s moments are overflowing with emotions that pull on our heartstrings and make us feel for the characters, whether we’ve experienced something similar or not.

(l-r) Manny Magnus as Prem Patel and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Suresh Patel in the original Disney+ film, “WORLD’S BEST”. All Rights Reserved By Walt Disney Studios.

But let’s also talk about how artistic World’s Best is in terms of visuals, music, and even performance. As mentioned before, there is a level of imagination that Prem has that allows the story to be pushed further along. We consistently see through over-the-top musical numbers where Prem is performing hip-hop rhymes with his father. Mashing these catchy songs with fantastical set designs is only enhanced by the high level energy and enthusiasm that is seen with Manny Magnus and Utkarsh Ambudkar. It’s clear there is on-screen and off-screen chemistry between the two that makes this father-child duo so much more believable and a joy to watch. Punam Patel as Prem’s mother, Priya is given her time to shine as well as she navigates the difficult path of parenting but never having a moment to properly grieve.

And while the soundtrack is not the most memorable, “Come Home”, which is performed by Ambudkar and rising TikTok creators in the music space, Kiran + Nivi, provides an added emotional layer to the overall film. Not only does it speak from the perspective of Suresh, Prem’s father, but it also symbolizes the relationship between Prem and his mother. It’s not uncommon for children to change who they are as they grow older and become more exposed to the world and what it has to offer. What matters is that they know they have a loving home to come back to at the end of every day.

(l-r) Manny Magnus as Prem Patel and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Suresh Patel in the original Disney+ film, “WORLD’S BEST”. All Rights Reserved By Walt Disney Studios.

It’s always a joyful feeling to remember we are in a time where stories for so many marginalized communities are becoming more imaginative as they leave the box they stuck in for so long. World’s Best continues to progress by allowing a South Asian kid to have a story that isn’t centered around stereotypes but instead, offers the ability to try different things and experiment with new ideas. The film might not have the smoothest transitions and may have a few scenes that lack explanation. But this can be easily overlooked given the way that this film explores deeper themes that are typically avoided with younger people. But that’s not all – did you know that Steve Buscemi was initially cast as a hero geologist, trying to distance himself from his usual low-life typecast? However, after several rewrites, his character, Rockhound, started to pick up some sleazy characteristics.

And Bruce Willis’s involvement in the film is equally fascinating – he stumbled upon the project while trying to exit another failing project called Broadway Road. Disney worked out a deal where Willis would star in Armageddon and two future films in exchange for taking on the cost of the failing project against his initial salary. Those two future films turned out to be The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

NASA’s Use of Armageddon in Training

NASA uses the 1998 film Armageddon as a training tool for management trainees. Trainees are tasked with spotting as many errors as possible in the film. So far, 168 errors have been identified. This exercise helps trainees to develop their critical thinking skills and attention to detail, which are essential in the space industry.

One of the errors spotted by trainees is the use of duct tape to immobilize a crew member suffering from space dementia. However, this is actually NASA protocol for immobilizing a crazed crew member. This demonstrates how the film accurately portrays some aspects of space travel.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED

In case anyone is unfamiliar with “The Coinless”, it is a universe in MMPR lore where this version of Tommy aka The Green Ranger was a willing member of Rita Repulsa’s forces. Being renamed Lord Drakkon, Tommy (along with Rita) led a brutal and deadly battle against Zordon’s forces of good.

When the smoke cleared, the Power Rangers as fans knew were no more. The Power Coins were no longer in their possession. While there still are individuals fighting the good fight, they are clearly outmatched by Drakkon.

Last readers saw Drakkon, he was lurking around Safehaven. After freeing Kiya, a fallen ranger, from her prison, the pair escape through a morphin arch with an ominous warning to the Omega Rangers. The message was clear: Destroy The Arch after because Vile will be invincible if she gets to it.

THE SAGA BEINGS…..

As this issue kicks off, Tommy and Kiya have returned to the world of the Coinless. Drakkon thinks the world is as he left it. However, as the pair progress through Angel Grove, that idea disappears quickly. The force of Dark Spector attack them! The odds to not appear to be in their favor until backup arrives in the form of Trini and Scorpina!

The meeting isn’t exactly cordial as Drakkon is not a friend, but as the saying goes, “The Enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Kiya and Scorpina are happy to ignore that and make a play to attack Drakkon. They are stopped by a familar face: Kimberly Hart aka The Pink Ranger or Ranger Slayer” of this universe for a brief time.

BREAKDOWN: Cesare gives readers an exciting tale to which plays as a nice companion to what is happening in the regular series. Drakkon never changes from being a villain readers love to hate. The interactions he has with the survivors plays into his arrogance and corruption.

Diving into much of the secrets of this universe made for a solid backdrop to the danger at hand. The landscape has drastically changed for Drakkon, which in turns makes him an uneasy ally.

New readers might be lost in certain areas but can pick up quickly to the events taking place. The final moments drive home the importance of the mission, while leaving readers guessing about what the future holds.

HORUS IN HELL!

Hidalgo is no stranger to the Power Rangers world. Being a former Rangers artist on a run with Mat Groom, Hidalgo picks right up harnessing the struggle of good vs. evil. Capturing the unhinged yet conniving deminer of Drakkon played a huge part in conveying the danger of Vile and Spector.

There is never a shortage of great action sequences throughout this book. Those are equally balanced with the team’s reactions to Drakkon’s defiance in the face of defeat.

Readers should enjoy seeing the pivotal panels bringing one of Kimberly’s biggest losses back to the forefront. The surprise panels hit their marks bringing hope, for however fleeting it is as the story races to its end. Hidalgo’s art reflects the dire times and bleak future ahead for the coinless superbly.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The dark times of the current Power Rangers story extends its’ grip into another universe with a thrilling adventure. Cesare, Hidalgo, and the team present an alternate time with an unlikely source of hope standing in the way of greater evil. Solid drama and fantastic action makes this a book to keep an eye out for on New Comic Book Day.
