‘Rye Lane’: Speaking Truth About Love and Life

Romantic comedies come in all shapes and sizes, but also in different colors, various styles, and complex senses of humor. Searchlight Picture’s latest film, Rye Lane is the perfect example of a film that is definitely a romantic comedy but feels more like a story of self-discovery. The film stars David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah as Dom and Yas, both of whom are recovering from terrible breakups. Either by coincidence or fate, the two cross paths and develop a connection over the course of a day.

Rye Lane is an incredibly simple film that focuses on two people who fail to acknowledge the truth of their own individual circumstances, something that many, if not all of us can relate to, particularly from when we were young. But it also depicts the way we will go above and beyond for others not just as a distraction from our personal lives but because of a strange amount of care we develop for others, even in such a short amount of time.

The film also explores natural insecurities alongside defense mechanisms and false ideas that are intended to help us cope but instead keep us hidden from the reality of any given situation. Half of the film is focused on Dom’s previous relationship while the other half prioritizes Yas’ situation, with each sitting in as a spectator as they both retell the story of their breakup. Unlike some stories, we’re given enough time to hear both stories even as it sticks to its 82 minute runtime, and there’s no time wasted by adding unnecessary fluff.

For a movie that tends to stay in one central location, Rye Lane provides enough story and background to get its point across. Despite being set in London where it’s much more common to see the more well-known locations, we get an endearing look into a small local street market to pair with everyday people living their ordinary lives. Fans of romantic comedies starring a very famous English actor will be treated to a brief but very funny easter egg as well.

Rye Lane is odd in the sense that it indulges heavily into very English or UK humor, doesn’t try to be more than what it is, and stays focused on its two main characters without drifting off and away from the main track. Instead, it gives us bright and local scenery, two incredibly interesting characters with absolutely bizarre situations, and a chance to watch each of them grow and self-reflect in a single day. If you’re looking for a new romantic-comedy to watch, Rye Lane is simple and sweet, like a romantic comedy should be. But it is also refreshing and funny, and provides a heartwarming story that speaks truth about love and life, and is bound to inspire the viewer in some way.
