Full Review For “Buttercup: Remembrance”

Earth has been destroyed and humanity is no more. There are, however, a select group on non-human survivors from the planet’s destruction. And they feel guilty for not being able to protect their friends, the humans themselves.

Written by McKay Wadsworth with artwork from Kristin Tingey, Buttercup: Remembrance takes place some time after the Earth’s destruction. The story follows our main character, Buttercup of the Plague, one of Earth’s last survivors. She is what’s known as a “Relic Hunter”, tasked with seeking out and retrieving lost artifacts and relics from their home planet.

Talking With The Writer

Over on my podcast (Crossover Comics Podcast) we got a chance to have an hour long interview with Wadsworth himself. Discussing a number of topics from how he became a comic book fan himself, how he teamed up with the artists, to the inspiration and long term plans for the series and company as a whole.

Full Hour Long Interview

McKay is not only the writer of the Buttercup series, he is also a co-owner/ founder of Kirin Comics, the independent publishing company he and his team created. It was an amazing conversation with a genuinely nice and sincere individual, who just want his teams creation to get the attention it so clearly deserves. ‘A Silent Voice’: 5 Years Later, It’s Still Capturing the Hearts of Audiences

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of its worldwide release, fans of anime charged into theaters to watch the celebrated film, A Silent Voice. Needless to say, it still holds up as it continues to captures the hearts of its intended audience.

The film follows Shoyo Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya as it explores their difficult beginnings, growing friendship, and struggles with life and belonging.

I went to see the film for the first time ever and I was absolutely blown away. Since last night, I have not been able to stop thinking about the movie or the heartfelt messages it perpetuates. So, without hesitation, I had to get my thoughts out about it which you can hear about below.

My Hero Academia Season 6 Is The Best Season Yet

0

The popular anime series My Hero Academia has returned for its sixth season! However, unlike previous seasons the season premiere just jumped right into the action — The Meta Liberation War arc.

The War BeginsMy Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 1 Breakdown

Season 5 of My Hero Academia followed the number two hero, Hawks, and his secret mission to infiltrate the Paranormal Liberation Front led by Tomura Shigaraki. Season 6 is the result of his mission.

Picking up where season 5 left off, the top Heroes of Japan, led by the current number one hero Endeavor, begin their assault against the Paranormal Liberation Front due Hawks efforts on two fronts.

On one front, the heroes have finally learned of the whereabouts of the hospital where Nomus are created and Dr. Kyudai Garaki, creator of Nomus and a key player in All for One’s circle. The mission sounds simple enough. Capture Dr. Garaki and stop the illegal creation of Nomus. However, like life, things are never as simple as it seems.

For one, as Endeavor and others confront the episode’s antagonist, we learn of Garaki’s Anti-Aging Quirk, which has helped All for One live for so long. On top of that, it’s revealed that this doctor is not the real one but a double made by one of the League of Villains, Twice, who can make duplicates of himself and others.

However, there’s hope. In an underground morgue, the real Dr. Garaki continues his attempt to make Shigaraki stronger, which is quickly interrupted by the number 5 Hero Mirko infiltrating the morgue.

The Number 5 Hero, Mirko, asks Dr. Garaki if he is the real doctor

Mirko vs. High-End NomusMy Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 2 Breakdown

In Episode 2, we finally see the fan-favorite Rabbit Hero in action. First, we get the official name of Mirko’s quirk, Rabbit. She can do everything a rabbit can do but even better. Mirko’s fighting style reflects that as she has shown excellent jumping ability, powerful kicks, and incredible speed.

The doctor shows great fear of Mirko destroying his work, so he sends five of his most pewful Nomu after, known as the High Ends.

Mirko attacked by Giraki’s High-End Nomus.

While they provide some problems for the number 5 hero, Mirko is more than able to hold her own, even when her arm is obliterated mid-fight. One thing to note is that Mirko is one of the most reckless fighters in all of My Hero Academia. However, the episode explains that Mirko’s brash fighting style is due to her fear of her death being in vain. Therefore, if she were to die, she wants to have no regrets, so she lives like there is no tomorrow.

We then transition to a different team of heroes led by the number 4 hero Edgeshot who is leading an assault on the Paranormal Liberation Army headquarters. While most of the UA students are left in the back to help with evacuation and to stop any villains who might get away, two of Class-1As students are on the front line, Fumikage Tokoyami and Denki Kaminari.

While Tokoyami looks pretty calm about the situation, Kaminari has shown to be quite nervous about the whole situation. UA teacher and Pro Hero Midnight steps in to help calm him down and offer some encouragement. Rather than focus on the entire mission, think about one person you want to protect. We don’t want to spoil who that was, but it will melt your heart!

The Assualt on the Liberation Army’s Headquarters

The assault begins when UA teacher and Pro Hero Cementoss unleashes an all-out cement barrage on the Liberation Army’s headquarters, severely damaging the building. While most of the Liberation army members are freaking out as they were not expecting an attack, one of the members with an electric quirk seems calm and ready to unleash an attack that can eliminate every hero on the battlefield.

We then cut to a flashback of Kaminari and Tokoyami when they were getting ready for the concert and see how Kaminari likes helping out others in need, especially those he deems friends. Then, in a moment of crisis, Kaminari jumps to the front of the hero’s group and uses his electrification quirk to act as a sort of Lightning rod and absorb the big electric attack keeping the other heroes from getting harmed.

The following episode preview shows that the jig may be up for Hawks as he starts to move to prevent the liberation Army from carrying out their plans.

An Inside Look at New York Comic Con – Is it Worth the Hype?

Nerd Initiative spent all four days at New York Comic Con 2022 and here is what SuperheroTok thought about one of the biggest conventions around.

It’s an experience and a choose your own adventure, but it may be too big.

WATCH: Fandoms – The road to NYCC and more!

There are incredible opportunities to meet mutuals, celebrities and comic book artists. And these are not to be missed!

But the lines are hours long, the cost is steep and the return on investment may not be fully worth it.

Here’s what SuperheroTok had to say:

Bleach Reminds Us All Why It Is One of The Big Three (MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

0

Woah! BLEACH came out of the gate swinging with the introduction to its final arc, Thousand-Year Blood War. Let me say it did not disappoint, even after ten years since the show aired.

Buckle up Nerds because we’re about to dive into Episode one of the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc to prepare ourselves for what’s to come, as this could be one of the anime community’s heaviest hitters this season.

BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 1 Breakdown

We can all agree that even before we got a glimpse of Ichigo and the Gang, the groundwork was set with that ominous voice describing the Quincy King’s rise back to power.

“The confined Quincy King regains his pulse after 900 years. His mind after 90 years. His strength after 9 years.”

Then a mysterious hand comes in, grabbing the Quincy symbol, and we see a shot of an amused smile, similar to what we’ve seen from Souske Aizen before. We get a glimpse of the Soul Society, an emergency protocol for Earth, and then BOOM! Hollows everywhere on two soul reapers, Rynouske and Shino. When all hope seems lost for them, here comes Ichigo and the Gang doing what they do best. Amazing right?

Now getting past the nostalgia of hearing our favorite strawberry yell “Getsuga-tenshou!”, the updated opening theme, and just good old monster fights in general that BLEACH is known for, we will notice a few details foreshadowing what’s to come in the final season of one of Anime’s most beloved series.

A Mysterious New Character Joins The Battle

First, we constantly get tossed back and forth between Ichigo and friends in the human realm and the Soul Society. For the Soul Society, hollow mass extermination is happening worldwide, and entire villages are also missing. The question is, who’s causing it? Two lieutenants find footprints that lead down two paths. Another force taking them or the village’s own people are kidnapping each other.

Second, we are introduced to a new mysterious character, Ebern, who, at first glance, everyone, including us, believes to be an Arrancar. However, upon further discovery, we learn he is a Quincy, and boy does he look like he is a threat, especially when Ichigo unleashes his Banki.

Bleach’s newest villain Ebern

This brings me to the third thing that set’s the stage for what’s to come. Throughout the whole back and forth between Ichigo and Ebern, we’re also reintroduced to the head captain of the 1st division, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, who is faced by this season’s antagonists known as the Wandenreich, who suddenly appears in his office.

The Thousand-Year Blood War Begins

Wandenreich quickly establishes itself as a powerful group to look out for by spearing one of Yamamoto’s Lieutenants through a window. Not only that, but without hesitation, they declare that they will declare war on the entirety of the Soul Society — a war that will begin in seven days. If that’s not enough, we also learn that this group has a unique ability or device that allows them to take away a soul reaper’s Bankai.

Of course, in typical protagonist fashion, this device doesn’t work on Ichigo in his fight with Ebern, but this will come back into play in future episodes.

Finally, in the end, we’re shown an interesting set of Quincy’s along with Ebern. Then the most intimidating shot of our series’ final antagonist, the infamous Quincy King, who sits high on his throne. The last thing he says is that he hates senseless violence, which begs, why start it?

BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 1 Review

This first episode wowed me. Not only was it visually stunning, but episode 1 came out swinging with conflict, drama, and many cameos. I liked that nothing was changed in art style, animation, or even how they introduced characters. They’re not only sticking to the manga’s story but also finding a way to honor what we loved about the original series we fell in love with.

Anyways, nerds, you’ve heard me rant and rave about this long enough, but I want to leave you with these questions because I will always be around to talk about Anime, especially BLEACH. What do you all think about BLEACH’s return to the anime scene? Have any ideas on what is to come based on the little tidbits we got from the first episode? I know I cannot wait for the second one to come out next week to see Uriu’s reaction to a Quincy attack. So, till next time Nerds!

Bleach is streaming now on Hulu in the US and Disney + internationally.

From the ‘BROS’ Red Carpet on Why it’s SO Important

Growing up I moved around a lot. Unfortunately for me, every time it was always the same small closed-minded type town that we’d move to.

I would constantly get bullied because everyone around me always seemed to know I was gay before I even knew what gay was. Don’t get me wrong, ever since I was very young I’ve known that I’ve had an attraction to men, but whenever 7-year-old to 13-year-old me would think about a relationship, I could only see myself with a woman.

I think it largely has to do with the fact that there was no representation in movies, TV, or media, everywhere I’d see a couple it was always a heterosexual couple.

I didn’t know any gay people, (until I found out much later on that my uncle was) so I thought my attraction to men was just something wrong with me and it would eventually pass.

Spoiler warning, it didn’t pass.

As time went on, I started to see more representation of gayness in tv shows I watched like Kurt in Glee, Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Lena/Stef in The Fosters.

This made me start to realize that maybe being gay wasn’t the problem, maybe it was everyone else.

I finally started to accept who I was, but while still living in a small community so it was tough as I was the first openly gay kid ever in my school.

As time went on I saw stars that I used to watch growing up come out like Garrett Clayton from Teen Beach Movie and Hayley Kiyoko from Lemonade Mouth. Finally, we moved to a more accepting and open-minded community for my last two years of high school and it was so great to finally not only come to terms with and accept who I was but embrace it.

Of course even today there are moments that I struggle, as I’m sure most of the queer community does too.

We have come a long way from where we once were even since I was a kid but we still have a long way to go. That’s why Universal Pictures’ newest Rom-com is so important.

Bros is the first ever gay rom-com by a major studio and it also has an all-LGBT principal cast. Ever since we got a trailer for this movie I have been very impatiently waiting for its release because this is exactly what I could’ve used when I was younger trying to figure out my sexuality, actually seeing it represented in pop culture.

I knew this movie was the real deal and breaking history for the community.

@thedonavanrose

#brosmovie is amazing and means so much to me and even more that it was the first time i walked a redcarpet! A day I’ll never forget! Thanks so much @Universal Pictures and @Scott Neumyer 🎥 Trivia Dude #gaymovie #bros #billyonthestreet #billyeichner #lgbt #gay #moviepremiere

♬ The Good Part – AJR

I was lucky enough to attend the LA premiere of the movie last week and it was the most amazing full-circle moment. I am from a small town in Wisconsin and only four years ago my city was voting to retract pride month just three months prior.

For me to be able to attend the premiere of the first gay rom-com after growing up in a place where the odds were always stacked against me was a dream come true.

I got to meet many of the people mentioned above that I grew up watching which helped me realize that I’m gay and that gay is okay.

It was such a surreal moment to be able to be in the same room as so many inspirational people not only in the media but in the LGBT community especially.

I think the most amazing part of the night was that there was something so special and heartwarming about watching this film in a room filled with people from the queer community.

You could almost feel the hearts of everyone finally breathing a breath of air because we finally have this; we are finally being represented by us for us, this was a huge moment.

This was basically the Marvel movie experience for the gays; we packed in that theater shoulder to shoulder, laughed, cried, and let out screams, it was an emotional rollercoaster that I will remember for years to come.

This movie truly shows what gay life is like; how we feel, how we date, how we socialize, it was finally something real and not the stereotypical gay movie. While of course there are a lot of Hollywoodized things in the movie and it may have gone a little too long in my opinion, the movie itself is so important.

It is paving the way for more films like this and hopefully more acceptance by the community. The day Bros came out there was a trailer released for another Gay rom-com coming out this winter starring Jim Parsons called “Spoiler Alert.”

This proves that this is history in the making and it’s so easy to be a part of it by going to your local theater and supporting Bros.

Right now it is not doing that hot at the box office despite the great reactions. You don’t have to be gay to see it, the community needs the support of all its straight Allies just as much as it needs the support of its own!

It’s so important for the younger people who may struggle to find themselves to have this representation. Bros is now in theaters so “come out” to theaters with a big group of friends and see the rom-com of the year!
