Wiccan: Witches’ Road #3 – Nameless No More

With Teddy a doll and without his magic, Wiccan travels on an adventure to seek the Demiurge. With the ancient Baba Yaga sending him on his way, Billy sets out with his husband in doll form, a few magical artifacts, and a nameless fox to restore his magic. Encountering a child to claim to be the Demiurge he seeks, Billy will soon learn that all is not as it seems. Fittingly for this third issue, the terrific trio of Kat, Megan, and I will be reviewing this issue.

Writing

Shawn: I really love what Wyatt Kennedy gave us in this issue. Every issue has been great, but this really feels like we get a glimpse of the true care that Teddy and Billy have for each other. I appreciated the way that Kennedy gave readers some answers to questions they’ve likely had since issue 2, but in doing so made everyone have even more questions going forward. This truly feels like readers are not just on a journey for Billy to recover his magic, but that everyone gets to go along for a ride of discovery. The narrative this issue has a little shock, a little intrigue, and a lot of love.

Megan: Wiccan: Witches’ Road #3 continues the thrilling journey down the Witches Road but adds in so many different factors. So much happened in this one issue, that by the end of it, you’re surprised it was only one issue. What that said, Wyatt Kennedy truly found an excellent balance of all the events, creating a perfect flow for the story.

In in the third issue, we see that Wiccan has found the Demiurge, and it just so happens to be someone from his past. With that emotional connection, it adds a new layer of depth to Wiccan’s story. Along with that, we also find out who Nameless is, and I honestly did not see that reveal coming! Now with new obstacles, new relationships, and having to form a new plan, Wiccan will do whatever it take to get his powers back, get Teddy back to his body, and get them out of this safely.

Kat: This issue’s writing is amazing. I love that Wyatt is able to give us a great story and some amazing action as well. I cannot wait to see what happens with the final 2 issues.

Art

Shawn: I’ve really loved the tones and colors we have gotten throughout Wiccan Witches Road so far. Andy Pereira’s lines are crisp and craft the perfect images for this series. The split panel in the middle of the issue is a really great example of the talent that Pereira brings to this series. Bryan Valenza does a great job with colors. It’s really easy to lean heavily onto the red in Billy’s costume as it pops on the page, but Valenza provides depth with a variety of colors and tones. Ariana Maher gets a lot of work in this issue and does outstanding with lettering. Despite the action-filled pages and the need for action words, the panels never feel cluttered and are easy to follow.

Megan: What I appreciate so much about the artists is that they nail the mystical energy that comes with the story. Andy Pereira, Bryan Valenza, and Ariana Maher go out of their way to bring the reader into the mysterious and magical Witches’ Road, and makes them feel the energy of the setting. Andy Pereira absolutely nails the emotions of the story, and puts them on full display through the characters. Bryan Valenza puts his coloring talents on full display with bringing in the darker tones that establishes the uncertainty of what can happen in this journey. Ariana Maher, who’s the letterer of the comic, creates a perfect flow of dialogue while highlighting the heightened emotions of the characters. All in all, the artists knocked this out of the park, yet again.

Kat: Andy’s art is so amazing in this series. This issue, the art is upped in every way possible. The use of colors is amazing. But also, the art helps to tell the story so well.

Final Thoughts

Shawn: 10/10 I really enjoyed this issue. The action and the reveal of Nameless will obviously be the big story, but it feels like Wyatt Kennedy is weaving together several stories at once, and doing so beautifully. Yes, readers are getting the main story of Billy, but are also learning more about Baba Yaga, about nameless, and most importantly, they are getting a glimpse into the story of Billy and Teddy. I can’t wait to see how they bring this one in for the landing in the final two issues.

Megan: 9/10. Wyatt Kennedy continues to cook with Wiccan: Witches’ Road #3! There’s so much to love about this comic, and the intensity just continues to grow. I’m very excited to see what’s next!

Kat: 10/10 This issue is really setting us up for what’s coming in these final 2 issues. The story is so good, and it’s only going to get crazier with these last 2 issues.

Trust is Earned

This continuation of Malevolent takes off right where issue one left off. Justin Jordan has created an intriguing story that is growing more with every issue. So let us get into this awesome second issue!

This issue takes us back to the police station after the events of issue one. This is where a lot of questions are asked and no true answers are given. Which is understandable considering the circumstances of what is going on. You can feel the frustration among the officers because they want clarification but are not “authorized” to have it.

The department’s new secret weapon (Morgan) showed real promise in issue one. But that did not grant her one hundred percent acceptance among the entire task force. There is still a mystery aura about Morgan. So far, she has been in one fight and won. But does she truly know her own role?

Another Mal (villainous monster) is attacking the city, and the task force takes the call. But without Morgan. Until she arrives to “save the day” one more time. It is within this part of the story that you see two different opinions form in regard to Morgan.

She starts to struggle against the Mal, and an officer intervenes to help divert the Mal’s attention away from Morgan. This is a pivotal moment for this story! This is showing progression among some of the officers within the task force. On the flip side of this coin is the “old school” officer. His mind is half made to take Morgan out and never have to deal with her again. But there is still that small ounce of uncertainty within him that causes him to stop.

The Writing

Justin Jordan has something very special with this story! The storyline is gripping and leaves you wanting more. The dialogue from the frustrated officers is felt when reading. I guarantee a good percentage of readers will have some comparison to how the officers feel about the situation. Then you have the uplifting dialogue from Morgan who is portrayed as this child-minded weapon. Everything about the writing for this story flows. The dialogue, narration, plot and character building are all on point!

The Artwork

John Bivens shows off his unique art style even more in this second issue. His line work is spectacular! And the use of extra line work helps to add more effect to certain panels. The facial expressions in this issue are some of the best that I’ve seen. From shock and awe to frustration and confusion. John nails it!

Felipe Sobreiro‘s coloration of this issue if fascinating! The color details for Morgan and the Mal are polar opposites. The color tone for this issue is dark, except in single panels staring only Morgan. Morgan is given bright colors that play into her aura within the book. Beautiful display of color and shading!

My Thoughts

Buckle your seatbelts! Justin Jordan has a story line here that I pray stays as an ongoing story. There is so much more to learn and dissect from this story. The character development is out of this world in terms of the officers becoming accepting of Morgan. And let’s not forget that not much if anything is really known about Morgan or who she could possibly become. This issue was entertaining to read and kept you guessing about what happens next. I could see this story becoming a TV show or movie potentially! Don’t miss out on this story!

Grade: 9/10

The Story

DC’s Vertigo continues with a bang with The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery #1 and they aren’t pulling any punches. The story follows Ezra, a private investigator who gets the results he wants by any means necessary. As well as an investigator, he also has an extensive background in archeology, which comes in handy with his newest client.

Ezra’s new client tells him that a very important artifact has gone missing from the Museum of Natural History and it’s imperative that it’s found. If someone were to get their hands on the artifact, they would have the nations under their control. To make things even worse, Ezra isn’t the only person looking for this artifact and those other people are out for blood.

Chris Condon brings a grounded story that has you hooked from the first few pages and keeps your eyes on the comic until the very end. What I really appreciated was learning so much about the characters and this new world, while keeping a feeling of a looming mystery over the story. I can’t imagine what happens next, but I’m very excited to find out.

The Art

The artwork of the comic matches the tone of the story perfectly. Jacob Phillips brings the story to life with perfectly capturing the grittiness energy that makes it feel very grounded. Phillips does a fantastic job with juxtaposition in contrasting colors that makes each page a gorgeous work of art.

Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou handles the lettering and creates a beautiful flow of dialogue throughout the comic. What I really appreciate about Otsmane-Elhaou’s work here is that he was able to perfectly portray the dialect and slang that most had in 1941, which added a great depth to the comic.

Final Thoughts

I found The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery #1 to be a breath of fresh air amongst all the superhero hype in the comic book world. I am very excited to see where this story goes!

Overall Grade – 9/10

Writing

Tim Seeley really takes the story to another level in this issue. I love that this series so far has not attempted to change or even further retcon what is perhaps one of the most convoluted retcons in Marvel history. In serving as an almost lost chapter series, Seeley gives us a more rich image of how Psylocke came to be. Readers continue to be treated to a great story that contributes to the law of a character. Many have always felt they wanted more of.

In addition to the great writing, I really like the decision to include The Chaste, and in doing so, build not only the lore around Psylocke, but also The Hand and Elektra. I think in building up these back stories. There was really a chance for the story to get convoluted and make an already complex story even more complex, but, Seeley and the other members of the creative team have done a great job carrying readers through this story.

I loved being introduced to Palm and other members of The Chaste. The “lost chapter” style series that Marvel has been releasing around Psylocke, Rogue, and Emma Frost may not be for everyone, but if you are someone who really enjoys the idea of world building and developing the lore around certain characters they have been a well written, easy to follow, and fun series. Psylocke:Ninja #2 continues that trend.

Art

Leon and Sánchez-Almara are putting in some of the best work I have seen from either artist on this run. From Leon, we are getting clean, sharp lines and incredible detail while Sánchez-Almara is finding the most creative uses possible for the color palette.

Ariana Maher continues to shine in this issue. When dealing with characters like Elektra and Psylocke or any other characters with strong mental abilities it takes a steady hand to guide the reader through the panels in a way that is both easy to follow and does not distract from the art or the narrative. I think Maher is one of the best in the business at doing that.

Final Thoughts

Overall this is another strong issue from this creative team. Seeley continues to prove time and time again that even in the most familiar of stories, there is room to let the characters and the story breathe a little bit. The continued work of this creative team, crafts, a story that feels satisfying and fulfilling. Psylocke:Ninja mentally feels like when you’re seeing a puzzle that is almost completed mimicking the satisfaction you feel putting the last few pieces in place. Even though you could see the picture before with the new pieces in place, the picture is fuller, clearer, and more satisfying.

Overall Grade 10/10

In the Mighty Thor #7, it’s no surprise that Thor is one of the mightiest heroes. This issue explores major themes of his relationships, his powers, and how he fits into the world. Thor is that classic hero that you know will do the right thing. He is the God of Thunder, and he understands and yields his power with responsibility. As far as story, it is quickly paced from the beginning to the end. Thor recognizes not only where he is in the moment, but, also where he is headed. His fast paced skills make him not only strong but also really wise. There are some quiet moments throughout this issue, that I appreciate. Thor becomes very soft in his movements and his demeanor, when he is talking to people he cares about.

When it comes to the art, it pops right off the page. I love how Ferry has intricate detail on how Thor looks when he is regular clothes, versus when he is suited up. A lot of the action scenes look very realistic, and I was really surprised to see that. This artist makes it so realistic, that I had to shut my eyes for one particular part, because I had gotten a little scared.

One thing I know that I wanted to see in this issue, is I wanted to see more of Thor’s personal life. What is Thor outside of running around, and being a hero. I want to see him in the wild, hanging out with his Avenger’s friends. I want him to be a “normal” guy, and see how he deals with real world stuff. Sometimes I feel like with the heroes, they get away from the “on the ground” problems. I hope in the next few issues, I can see what I mentioned and a lot more. This story was solid, but it went by very quickly. Hopefully, Ewing can stretch it out, and give some more depth to Thor. Overall the issue is great, and can’t wait to read more issues and complete the run.

Overall Grade: 8/10

HARLEY QUINN #59 – The First Date

The Story

The time has finally come for Harley Quinn and Althea Kang’s first date! With the many flirtations between the two, surely this date will be as hot and heavy as both can hope for. Well, the night goes very unexpectedly, which is oddly expected for Harley.

Althea picks Harley up for their date, showing she’s willing to make the first romantic gesture. Then she takes Harley to a very fancy and expensive restaurant, which doesn’t seem like something Harley would be into, which is wasn’t. But who is Harley to knock a date for going to the wrong place? As the night progresses, the craziness continues and grows, and somehow ends up with a hospital visit. To say this date did not go according to plan would be an understatement.

The best way to describe this comic was “extremely fun”. Elliott Kalan get the energy high throughout the comic and left surprises at every turn. Seeing Harley be in complete control of the date was fantastic to see, while Althea thought she was the one leading the date. By the end of the comic, you could see that this date turned out to be very authentic to Harley, but certainly shook Althea up in ways she didn’t think were possible.

The Art

Carlos Olivares, Marissa Louise and Lucas Gattoni used their fantastic artistic talents to make this comic such a good time. Olivares was able to illustrate the many emotions of the characters through their facial expressions and their body language perfectly, which added to the heightened emotions brilliantly. Marissa Louise brought so much vibrancy to the comic, leaving every page a joy to read. Lucas Gattoni created a perfect flow of dialogue and managed to nail the tones of the characters in their words. All in all, the artists made this comic a gorgeous work of art that had as much excitement in the pages as Harley did for her date.

Final Thoughts

Harley Quinn #59 was a fantastic read with many emotions wrapped into the story. Everyone should be sure to have this on their pull list this week!

The Story

This comic is reviewed by Nerd Initiative’s Shawn, and your truly, Megan!

Shawn – Erica Schultz continues to write an entertaining story that reveals who Rogue was and who she has become. This story really feels like a learning to walk again kind of story. It’s clear through Schultz’s story and the character’s history that Rogue is not who she used to be, but I really love that Schultz is pushing readers to ask questions about how who she was impacts who she has become.

Schultz picks up this issue, coming off a strong opening salvo in issue one, and runs with it. The story flows well and manages to focus on Rogue while giving us insight into her relationships with both her mother and Remy in a satisfying way. The last few panels setting up the future conflict in only the second issue were a really nice surprise.

Megan – In Rogue #2, we see Rogue trying her best to get answers from Mystique and Destiny, but to no success. As always, Mystique keeps her secrets to herself, which infuriates Rogue. However, this won’t be the end of Rogue’s search for answers. She is determined to find out what these cryptic visions mean by any means necessary. What she didn’t plan on happening was her powers malfunctioning in the worst way, putting her in harm’s way.

Erica Schultz brings an all-new story for Rogue and one that revisits her past. Rogue thought her Brotherhood of the Evil Mutant days were behind her, but it seems that those days are coming back to haunt her. This story is dripping in mystery, which I love. The problems with her powers, Mystique being as vague as possible, her visions, all mysteries that lead to somewhere that I’m excited to see.

The Art

Shawn – The art team for Rogue continues to stun with their work. One panel in particular in this issue will stand out from the variety and skill present in line and color, such as a complex panel.
I loved in issue one and continue to love in this issue the lines and colors that Zaharia and Jern combine to create the aged Mystique. We’ve seen the character being so powerful and manipulative throughout their history, and Zaharia and Jern craft an image of a frail Mystique that makes it difficult not to feel some sympathy for.

I really love Ariana Maher’s decision for the small and subtle coloring blocks marking speech bubbles early in the issue. They’re subtle enough that they don’t distract from the words or the art on the page, but still significant enough that the eyes pick them up and help the story flow. The decision to add a tail to Mystique’s bubbles adds to the feeling of frailty as it makes the reader feel like she’s having to force the words out.

Megan – The artwork ofRogue #2 is nothing short of spectacular! Luigi Zagaria, Espen Grundetjern, and Ariana Maher but in so much work, and the readers are benefiting from it heavily. Each character is drawn beautifully in their classic look glory. We even get a few slight looks at other characters who aren’t in the story, which was a fun surprise. Luigi Zagaria does a fantastic job with this, making the characters the focal point of the panels. Espen Grundetjern lends his coloring talents and covers the comic in vibrancy and contrasting colors, which brings so much excitement to the pages ofRogue #2.

Final Thoughts

Shawn – 10/10. Schultz is really hitting her stride in this issue. Far too often, comics drop a super satisfying first issue and hit a sophomore slump in the second issue, but that doesn’t happen with Rogue #2. Schultz is crafting a compelling tale that appeals to long-term Rogue fans and new readers alike.

The art team continues to stun, bringing Schultz’s words to life. The narrative of this issue really let Zaharia and Jern shine, and the issue is better because of it. This Rogue series may be some of the best work we’ve seen from Ariana Maher, who continues to elevate her work and with it the entire team from issue to issue.

Megan – 9/10. Erica Schultz has me hooked to the story, while the artists made it hard to look away from the pages. I can’t wait to see where this goes because so far, it’s been an absolute thrill.

Overall Grade – 9.5/10

Iron Man #2 – Cover – Ryan Stegman & Frank Martin (Credit Marvel Comics)

The Story:

Tony Stark and Madame Masque have been playing a game of cat and mouse for years. But, knowing that he once told her his greatest fear, Tony is in a race against the clock to find her before that fear becomes a reality.

The Writing:

Joshua Williamson did such a phenomenal job setting up this story with the first issue, the concern was if he could continue the momentum in the second issue. Thankfully, not only did you maintain the momentum, he upped the ante! With incredible moments from Tony Stark, both in and out of the armor, Williamson proves he understands how to write such a complex character. This issue delved into Tony’s past while setting up his future in such an excellent way that it gave me a dose of nostalgia while keeping me on the edge of my seat, eagerly looking forward to what’s next.

Iron Man #2 – Cover – Skottie Young (Credit Marvel Comics)

The Art:

The art team worked so perfectly together in this issue. The line work of Carmen Carnero blended together with the colors of Nolan Woodard to give this issue a unique style while feeling familiar at the same time. Iron Man’s new armor looks fantastic in action and the character in the pool (no spoilers…) is something that I can never scrub from my memory, no matter how hard I try. Overall, just an absolute win from this art team!

Overall Grade: 10/10

What can I say? This was the perfect second issue. I am so excited for the trajectory of this series. Incredible art mixed with wonderful writing of my favorite character… Iron Man is back baby!

The Writing

The Infernal Hulk is attacking wherever she pleases, and there’s no way to stop her in sight. The only person who might be able to help is Bruce Banner, but there’s no way to guarantee that he can help, and there’s no telling where he is. While Bruce was violently ripped apart from his big and green alter ego, it begs the question where is the Incredible Hulk now? The Hulk is definitely dead, while Eldest has taken over his body as her vessel, but the Hulk’s consciousness is far away in the Hulkscape. Into the Hulkscape, Hulk is met with many different versions of the Hulk. All of the ones that were victims of Eldest are there with him and are prepared to fight a war.

Just when you think the comic can’t get any better, Phillip Kennedy Johnson takes it up another notch. We’ve covered so much of this story in such a small amount of time with only four issues, but each issue is impactful and powerful. In The Infernal Hulk #4, we’re taken beyond Eldest and past Bruce Banner to the Incredible Hulk in the Hulkscape, and it puts into perspective just how damaging Eldest has always been. I’m not sure where this story is going, but I am extremely excited to see what Johnson has in store for the fans.

The Art

I cannot sing praises loud enough about the artwork of The Infernal Hulk #4! Nic Klein is a creative genius when it comes to art, and it shows on every page of the comic. Not only are the panels beautifully detailed, but they have a vibrancy that just hasn’t been shown in a Hulk story before. With Matthew Wilson at his side, these two artists bring so much heat to the story with their woke in the art. Some of my favorite panels take place in the Hulkscape, which has such an otherworldly energy. It leads us to getting some jaw-dropping full-page panels that make it hard to turn the page.

Final Thoughts

The Infernal Hulk gets better and better, and with this creative team behind it, there’s no telling what’s in store for the readers. If you’re a Hulk fan, then this is the comic for you!

Overall Grade – 10/10

The Story for Spider-Man & Wolverine #10

We kick off with Spidey playing matchmaker to an angry Wolvie and Mariko. As he quickly takes the hint he’s no longer wanted, he swings through Canada and unexpectedly has his spidey sense tingle. In Canada, of all places. He suddenly realizes him and his bub of a partner didn’t finish their job. Arachnix is all healed up and found them. As the fight begins, they’ve learned what not to do. Now to figure out how to finish this once and for all.

The Art

Holy hot damn, was this art phenomenal! I think it’s fair to say that Spider-Man & Wolverine are the two most popular characters to ever grace the pages of a Marvel comic book, and whoa did this issue do them more than justice in living up to how much they’re loved. The lines, the shading, colors, lettering… it all wove together as beautifully as a spider web on Peter’s best day.

From a perfect Wolvie action shot, to a shot right in the money maker, and so many webs. Every single page was a standout moment for the art.

Final Thoughts

Spider-Man & Wolverine #10 was such a fun and action-packed issue. Perfect for wrapping up their story… for now. Spidey’s endless quips are the perfect match to Wolvie’s grunts and grrrs. They balance each other out so beautifully, and Marc Guggenheim nailed them both flawlessly. This art team then took this fantastic story and made it top-tier gorgeous. I can’t wait for more of my favorite web head and short king together.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

Whether you prefer your heroes friendly or angry, this is one comic every Marvel fan should grab! THWIP…SKINT!
