Wiccan: Witches’ Road #2 – Beware of Baba Yaga

Published:

Wiccan: Witches Road is back with issue number 2. This week, the trio of Kat, Megan, and Shawn is tackling the adventures of Billy and Teddy. After venturing where they shouldn’t (despite the warnings of a fox), Billy and Teddy find themselves in a very compromising predicament. Such is to be expected when entering the domain of Baba Yaga.

Writing

This comic is reviewed by Nerd Initiative’s Kat, Megan, and Shawn!

Kat: Wyatt took this issue to new heights. The first issue set up what was coming for the rest of the series, and this issue was amazing. The writing is amazing, and I cannot wait to see where we go from here with it.

Megan: Wiccan: Witches’ Road #2 is a perfect example of continuity that also elevates the excitement of the story. Wiccan finds himself trapped in the house of the Baba Yaga, without his magic and beheaded. Things are seeming very bleak, but things turn around when he learns more about the Baba Yaga and what his true mission is. Wyatt Kennedy is able to raise the stakes even higher and give us a wildly magical story that showcases Wiccan’s motivations and highlights his love for his husband. I’ll be anxiously waiting for the next issue to drop because Wyatt Kennedy has me hooked!

Shawn: I did not expect Kennedy to come out firing like this. The first two issues of this series have both been so different and so good. Just page after page of Billy getting taken down a peg after all the Demiurge talk was enjoyable to read. Most of us have had an experience where someone learning something, knew something, got a title, and needed everyone to know about it. Kennedy plays that story out to almost comedy levels of proportion in this issue, in a way that’s so satisfying. I love where this story is going. It’s complex and enjoyable

Art

Kat: Andy, Bryan, and Ariana are the creative dream team. The 3 of them together are amazing, and it’s incredible. Andy’s art in this issue is phenomenal. Bryan’s coloring is beautiful, and Ariana’s lettering is out of this world.

Megan: There’s so much to love in terms of the artwork of Wiccan: Witches’ Road #2, it’s hard to narrow it down. A few of my favorite things are the magical aspects of the scenes that perfectly set the tone as a Wiccan story. That matched with how truly creepy the Baba Yaga was is all perfectly handled.

Shawn: This marks my second review this week with Ariana Maher on the lettering, and man, what great work. Everything flows well with a certain emphasis added that makes you feel the words of Baba Yaga in your soul. Andy Pereira and Bryan Valenza work well together to cover a wide range of settings for a single issue. Whether it’s the dark, brooding domain of Baba Yaga or the fiery breath of one of Marvel’s most famous dragons, the colors set the mood perfectly and highlight the time and care that the art team put into this issue. The image of Baba Yaga, face illuminated, looking over the text of her witches’ book, is the stuff of nightmares in the best way

Final Thoughts

Kat: 10/10. This comic continues to impress me with every page. I love this series, and cannot wait for what is coming on the horizon.

Megan: 10/10. The writer raises the stakes and gives us mystery around every corner that keeps you locked into the comic. The artwork will have your eyes hooked to each page. All around an excellent read!

Shawn: 10/10. I said it earlier, but I’m enjoying this series. Even if you haven’t considered Billy a full-fledged “hero,” he’s certainly one now after experiencing the all too familiar humbling of heroes. The last panel sets up significant intrigue headed into the next issue, and I can’t wait to see what happens as Wiccan continues down the Witches Road.

Overall:
