At New York Comic Con, Wizards and Marvel got together to announce a new expansion of Magic: The Gathering due in April 2027. The new set will focus on the mystical side of Marvel with beautiful new art from a variety of arts.

Background

Wizards of the Coast press releases indicate that the Darkhold Destiny set will focus on the dark side of the Marvel Universe unleashed on the universe. The story says Hel is empty, and vampires, devils, and sorcerers are now free across the universe. This brings mystical Marvel characters like Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Hela, and even Blade to the forefront of Magic: The Gathering.

Original Story

Darkhold Destiny will enter new territory that previous Marvel collaborations haven’t entered with an all-new story. Wizards of the Coast’s in-house team crafted an all-new story that will also translate into an original Marvel comic to support the release. The new story will be crafted by the Hivemind, aka Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzig, with early indications being that Hela and Dormammu will obtain the Darkhold and use it to travel across the multiverse. This will bring out familiar Marvel heroes like Doctor Strange, Blade, Thor, and Clea in an attempt to fight back. The comic is currently scheduled for digital release in February with a physical release to join the card set’s release in April.

Commander Decks

With the reveal and the preorders going live, we also got our first look at four Commander Decks that will be released. Titled Gods of Asgard, Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, and Strange Academy, the decks feature familiar Marvel villains and heroes on the cover.

Each Commander Deck will come with a ready-to-play deck featuring 30 Commander cards ready to play. Foil borderless Commanders will be in each box, with cover art indicating that Hela, Blade, Doctor Strange, and Thor will serve as Commanders. The decks promise to provide cards for the mighty, mystic, and monstrous.

Art

With the reveal, Wizards of the Coast revealed a wide variety of cards that will be included in the set. From Illyana Rasputin to The Tomb of Khonshu, there are some beautiful pieces of art revealed in the initial drop.

On Sale Date

Preorders are available now on the Magic: The Gathering website. The official global release date is set for April 9th, 2027, with prerelease events scheduled for April 2nd-8th, 2027. The set will hit the MTG Arena app on April 6th, 2027. Finally, the tie-in digital comic will drop on February 26th, 2027.
