“The Eye Collector #1” – Such Sights to Show You

“The Eye Collector” is, very fittingly, an eye-catching title. As soon as i saw it, I knew I had to review it and I’m so happy that I did! Writers Jonathan Ball and G.M.B. Chomichuk take us into an alternate reality when the Apollo 10 mission went awry. You may be asking “how” or “why” the mission turned out differently here. Well let me ask you this: are you sure you want to know?

Eye For Writing

So, as you now know, the book centers on an alternate version of the Apollo 10 space flight. It’s this very flight that catches the attention of what’s the scariest monster I’ve seen in years. This led me to form the question of “why?” Why did the mission attract the attention of the monster? Why did this make it so interested in humans and Earth? Most importantly, who’s the Man in the Moon? I asked these questions not due to the lack of information, but the want to learn so much more!

In such a short number of pages, Ball and Chomichuk crafted a truly terrifying space horror. I legitimately haven’t been this scared of space since my first time watching “Alien.” Whenever a piece of horror makes me this horrified, I’m left wanting more. That being said, I’m already eagerly anticipating the next issue, especially since they promised to break a lot of comic rules.

Eye For Art

Where do I even begin with the art? Done by Chomichuk himself, his work is completely unlike anything I have ever seen. He created this Lovecraftian-nightmare fuel that I don’t think will ever leave my subconscious. However, that is exactly why I love it! His work really lends itself to the already uneasy nature of the story, drastically intensifying it in ways I didn’t think horror comics could.

Contributing to the uneasiness in the art was the lettering from Lyndon Radchenka. The way that what appeared to be static was done was wholly unique, yet easy to understand what it was. As for the monster, it was given these really cool dialogue boxes that gave it this very sinister vibe. All in all, amazing work.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a horror title that’s unlike anything currently on shelves, this is it! Ball and Chomichuk crafted the start of something wholly unique and truly scary. This is unlike anything I’ve ever read. If the thought of space and aliens scares you, then you need to pick this up!
