Is it better to have loved then lost, or never loved at all? It’s a Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special, and while Dean tends to enjoy this hallmark holiday by referring to it as “unattached drifter Christmas,” this Valentine’s he and Sammy are busy with some odd corpses and a lot of break up.

The Story for SUPERNATURAL Valentine’s Day Special
Eda: Reading this book felt just like watching another episode of the show. As someone who finds comfort in “Supernatural” it felt like coming home to the smell of a nice, warm apple pie and a good beer. The way Sam & Dean were written, I could vividly hear Jared & Jensen in my head and I love the nods indicating that this story took place around the time of seasons one and two. Between the mentions of Jess and the yellow eyed demon, them utilizing John’s notebook and making a joke about potentially meeting angels after having met a god, this is most certainly something for fans of the earlier seasons to cherish. Preeti Chhibber did utterly fantastic work.
Matt: Preeti drops us right into this one-off issue as though we were watching one of the famous monster-of-the-week episodes. There are a lot of fun nods to the characters, such as Dean eating pie and a burger that stick out and show the deep cut appreciations that Preeti has for Supernatural. I appreciate how we get a different look at a religion and a God that we haven’t seen before, and at the end of the day, there was no true ill will at all, either. Fans may enter this thinking that it is another love story however, that is not the case at all and this issue is a lot of fun!
Lauren: It’s season one Sam and Dean. Sammy’s loss of Jess is fresh, and suddenly very relevant to the case at hand. While the normal weird dead body, finds them a case, there’s a lot more than they bargained for. Love is definitely not in the air this Valentine’s Day. While romance is not the Winchester’s specialty, they’re about to drop some life saving knowledge on loving and losing. Sprinkled with sarcasm, pie, and bullets, of course.
The Art
Eda: The combined work of Pasquale Qualano and Arabia Studio did a whole lot to bring this world to life in a semi-new way. I was roped in, being made to feel like I was watching a brand new episode while simultaneously being given amazing visuals that can only be found on the page. One such image that comes to mind is where a certain character reveals her true nature to the brothers in the woods. It was such a trippy and beautiful sight to behold.
Matt: The color work is beautiful in this issue, and the details from our characters continue to bring the heart to this run. We did get an epic-looking monster of the week. I loved how our Goddess shines on the panels, and there is a certain softness to her, all the same. The art and the lettering make this a fun adventure cover to cover.
Lauren: The art did a beautiful job of delivering the comic book versions of my favorite monster hunters. However, there were a few panels that absolutely stood out. In true Supernatural fashion there was a twist after the boys think they have it all figured out. This realization is where the art truly shined. We got some absolute badass moments that were just beautiful as well in both art and colors.

Overall Grade: 9.8/10
Eda: An astounding 10/10. Any fan of Supernatural needs to pick this book up immediately.
Matt: 10/10. This issue captures perfectly those fill-in episodes that still tie into the main overarching plot. It’s a light-hearted yet fast-paced issue that brings out so much of what I love about Supernatural!
Lauren: 9/10. This Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special brought us back to that 2005-2006 season and gave us the OG Sam and Dean with a monster of the week. While we got 15 seasons, there is still so much out there that they never touched. I absolutely love getting to explore more of these stories, and “monsters” through comic books. This issue nailed the characters, and the story beautifully. All while wrapping up with a cute little nod of what’s to come.
