SUPERNATURAL #4 – Never Underestimate the Power of a Library

Published:

It’s early on in the Supernatural days, and Sam and Dean keep finding themselves in off situations. Even for them. Their last case led them to a killer book club, and now they seem to be heading toward a library. A library that apparently is getting a reputation.

The Story for SUPERNATURAL #4

Lauren: The opener for this issue was so perfect I heard that beautiful opener sound any Supernatural fan knows all too well. It usually follows a gruesome supernatural death. As we take our focus back to the boys, they’re out of control, and to no fault of their own. Sam trusts the process, while Dean fights against it. As they’re still trying to make heads or tails of their recent book club meeting, they find themselves at a library. However, in true Supernatural fashion, there is much more than meets the eye.

Matt: Supernatural is all about the opening credits and what they use to hook the audience, and this one had an excellent hook, as there was more than a nice and quiet library. Sam gets his time to shine in this one, as we tend to forget this is between seasons one and two, so this was a time where Sam was still working through losing Jess and adjusting to life on the road with Dean. This issue felt like a big growing moment as Sam moves on despite the temptations being thrown his way by the librarian from Hell. Also I need to know what is up with the demon car because I feel we just move past that way too easily.

The Art

Lauren: From dark monsters to a classic comic pop art feel. I loved how the art in this issue moved the story along so perfectly. From a calm setting to chaos, each panel incited feelings to compliment where the words were taking us. All while giving us the Sam and Dean expressions that convey the early seasons of the world’s most infamous monster hunters. I could hear their voices through the words and the art, as if I was watching the show.

Matt: Sam gets more of his season 2 look going in this issue with his hair. Are we really even Supernatural fans if we can’t tell what season we are in by his hair? The lavish colors of our ghastly protagonists also stand out in a fun way amongst the dark library. It allows us to see different creatures and dive into some other lore that the show may not have been able to do. The way our demonic librarian looks so sweet and innocent one moment and then terrifying the next in all great detail is what makes this issue a ton of fun.

Overall Grade: 9.3/10

Lauren 9.25/10: The most disappointing thing about this issue was the last page, solely because it had ended. We picked right off from issue #3, and I was hooked as soon as I opened issue #4. The story continues, and while answers weren’t presented, the mystery deepened and sucked me further in. The boys find themselves in a place that usually provides them answers, only to find themselves with more questions. I can’t wait to see how this story/monster plays out. Until then I’ll go enjoy some beer, pie, and rewatch Supernatural… again.

Matt: 9.5. The entire team does an excellent job of bringing us into the adventure instantly and drumming up the possibilities of what the brothers are dealing with. Just as we feel we may get some answer, the book ends, and the feeling of needing the next one instantly is a telltale sign of a great issue!
