The Story

Life is pretty ordinary for a guy like Vasilis. He has an ordinary job at a restaurant, he has a core group of friends he hangs out with, and he prefers the company of his friends rather than his parents. All normal stuff for a normal guy. That is, until he’s no longer a normal guy.

One night, Vasilis goes out drinking with his friends after making an excuse out of hanging out with his parents, but he still ends up at his parent’s house at the end of the night. His good friend Cora dropped him off there the night before, so it looks like all signs are pointing to being stuck with his parents. His parent’s agenda includes going to his grandmother’s, Yia Yia Helena, house and Yia Yia is over the moon that he will be there.

Inside the house, there is a lot that needs to be done, and Vasilis graciously helps out any way he can. Packing up the attic, he finds some kind of mysterious amulet. To him, it’s just some kind of souvenir from his grandparent’s honeymoon and nothing more. Putting it in his back pocket he gives it no more attention as he gets back to work.

What Vasilis doesn’t know is that whatever he just put into his back pocket will change his life in ways he cannot possibly fathom. The amulet holds a power that will change the very fabrics of what he believed his world always was.

The Writing

Paul Eza brings what can only be described as a perfect start to what seems like will be an explosive and intriguing world. The story is very compelling, starting with a normal and relatable life of a person who’s just getting through the day. It ends with leaving you on a cliffhanger that puts it into perspective how crazy the new world that little amulet unlocked. I’ll be very anxiously waiting to read the next issue because Eza’s writing has me absolutely hooked!

The Art

The artwork inside The Olympian #1 matches and illustrates the tone of the story perfectly. The drawings and settings play on a very muted tone, mimicking the normal life of Vasilis. But then explodes with action, adventure, and vibrancy as you can feel his life taking a turn for the unexpected as soon as the amulets takes control. I loved that Dee Fish and Ibrahim Aydin were able to capture the essence of what is a perfect build up in a story and bring it to life flawlessly.

Final Thoughts

The Olympian #1 brings a fresh feeling to topic of living a normal life only for everything to change on the drop of a hat. The characters are relatable, their lives are easy to become familiar with, and you find yourself getting to know them very easily. The story is a beautiful buildup into the fantasy genre from a normal life. All is handled perfectly by Paul Eza.

Overall Grade – 10/10
