Sleep #5 Goes a Step Further

The beast is unleashed again and this time the results are cataclysmic. Jon wakes up in the High School, destruction throughout the hallways and gymnasium. As he stumbles to the exit, Tabby stands there holding his glasses. Outside, the red trail of destruction leads to the church, where brutal images show the aftermath of the wrath of the beast hidden inside. The visuals are astounding, and alarming. Things are escalating.

In Case You Missed It: Sleep #4 The Rapture Comes to Those Who Faith

Tabby takes Jon back to her office in hopes of finding answers. The lab is destroyed as well, but she says that this was not Jon’s doing, but her own. This is where I have some red flags come up. What is really going on with Tabby. She seems too comfortable with what is happening. She’s not afraid of Jon. Her work place is highlighted with blue which is unlike anywhere else. Her boss comes in with a reminder that the building is to be evacuated and asks “who’s this guy?”. When she says she’s mention him before, he’s very standoffish as his Geiger Counter begins to tick. It’s all so suspicious.

Tabby’s theory is that whatever happened to Jon originated in the local mines. This is the place we’ve seen Jon awaken before upon a pile of bodies. This is a moment where I’m reminded of the “Hot or Cold” game. There are places we’ve seen a lot red before. These are things like “you’re getting warm” or “you’re getting hotter”. By then end of this issue is when we would say “You’re on fire, you’re burning up!”.

The Past Holds the Secret to Jon and his Condition in Sleep #5

Zander Cannon has taken us on these mysterious ride that includes so many breadcrumbs. I can say i’m not smart enough to have pieced it all together yet, but I feel it has something to with Jon AND Tabby. Everything that shines bright red feels like a piece of the puzzle that is the history of Jon. The optometrist, the church, the High School, the mine…it all feels personally connected. Then there’s the blue with Tabby and her lab. Is she part of the cure or the cause? I’m not sure.

All of these fascinating elements makes for a riveting story. Is it a slow burn, yes. Is it thrilling, also yes. These characters are magnetic and mysterious. The world itself exudes a strange aura. I can’t help but crave the next piece of the puzzle. Jon’s past hides a secret, I’m sure of it. However, so does this town as a whole. It’s a living breathing character in the story. I just want to know what it’s all hiding!
