The UnChosen #3 What is the Truth Behind the Curtain?

Published:

Aida is down the power behind The Novitiate. When the truth is thrust upon her by The Headmaster, it’s too much to handle. Before she can have a moment to process, the group that attacked her before arrives with a message: Not everything is as it seems. Things are getting much more complicated and tempers flair before Aida decides to leave The Tower and work things out for herself. The UnChosen continues!

The Illusion of Choice in The UnChosen

It’s a classic case of “Who’s the good guy here?!” The Novitiate seem like they mean well. Other than a little violence, nothing about them really seems off. When she’s thrown into the deep in, whatever it is, it’s too much to handle and she runs off into the woods. This is where things get interesting. The “antagonists” form the first issue show up with soft voices and open hands. They want to tell Aida the truth about The Novitiate.

In Case You Missed It: The UnChosen #2 The Past Can Unlock the Future

So who’s really telling the truth here? The Novitiate are strict, rigid, and mysterious, but Brother Reilly seems to really care for Aida. The young group of outcasts have a legitimate story, but no real proof. Aida’s desire to find her mother is the only thing driving here forward, and anyone with tangible answers is where she wants to be.

The UnChosen Puts Us in the Characters Shoes

There are so many awesome concepts at play in this issue. It’s hard to get a bead on anything that’s true. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s frustrating at times to still not understand what’s really at play, but that’s also a great way to express the same feelings that Aida has. It puts us in her shoes. Other than what she saw we she touched The Shard, we have the same information as she does.

The Art of the UnChosen

The art and design in this issue is fantastic. There’s not a ton of action overall, but that is actually filled in with the drama going on around Aida. The Shard is beautiful and a great center piece to the beginning of the issue. The body language of Daniel also sells the panic in his dialogue when he thinks Aida’s been turned. Finally, the magical effects in the climactic fight are bright and beautifully created. The way they form weapons is awesome!

Overall Grade 9/10

The UnChosen is building this mysterious world of magic and intrigue. It’s a lot of fun and there’s enough bait to keep you involved. I do wish we could get a little more information at times, but I’m in it for the long haul. We get action and conflict in each issue that makes it a great story none the less. Add in the wonderful artwork and perfect color work and The UnChosen is a visual delight!
