Sleep Brings Intrigue
Johnathan Reason wakes up from what seems like a rough night by a phone call from his friend Tabby. Johnathan expresses concern for his cat because his front door is open. That’s small potatoes though considering there’s a slaughtered cow covering his front yard!
Zander Cannon takes us through a day in the life of Johnathan as he goes to church, worse his job as a barista, and meets up with friends new and old. We get a clear picture of who Johnathan is. He seems quiet and perhaps introverted. People with control over him tend to be bullies, but he still cares enough to be polite and helpful. He doesn’t want to “rock the boat” so to speak. As his day goes on things get stranger as he notices things around him. By the end of the day he’s alone at again, eating Chinese food and watching TV until he falls asleep.

Characters and Setting in Sleep
The supporting cast of characters are unique and familiar. They each seem to play a crucial role in who Johnathan is, was, or may one day be. The town itself feels like a force of push and pull on Johnathan. The setting and environment as a whole really plays a heavy part in the story, most of which is yet to be revealed.
Sleep Lives in the Grey Area
The artwork for Sleep is very unique. The characters and design as a whole feels very basic and animated. That is not a bad thing either. Each setting is very immersive. Characters emotions and reactions feel genuine and natural.

The big highlight of this book is that its’ in a sort of grey scale. Black and white isn’t really what I would call it. Everything is grey. To be a monochrome book, the lighting is phenomenal. Cannon uses shadows and bight whites to bring the world to life. One color does end of standing out more than any other and that’s red. Johnathan’s glasses are red. Certain items throughout the story are also red. It’s an important color to look out for. As the story goes on we see more of it it graffiti and odd symbols that only Johnathan can see.
Overall Grade 8.5/10
Sleep sets the tone for what will be an interesting tale. This issue starts out with an odd awakening and then moves into a normal day, only to become odd again as Johnathan gets closer to sleep. This story is methodical and deep. This read is for the person looking for something more than “wow, that’s cool!” This one has layers and I can’t wait to peel them and see what’s inside!
