Alone in the City
Now that Nyx finds herself back in New York, she finds that she is all alone. When she left New York before she burned some bridges, which makes her nervous. She is being followed by a crow, and she doesn’t know who has sent it. In an effort to figure out what’s going on, she visits A.J for a place to stay and recoup. A.J not only forgives her but offers her a sanctuary as well. It is revealed since Nyx left A.J has been collecting rare occult books for her.
The reunion is short lived as Nyx gets summoned by the crow to a meeting in the macabre underworld. After using the proper sigils Nyx enters a secret realm through a door in a Chinese restaurant. She enters a speakeasy, nightclub, and coven in one kind of place. The Witches in this place are not happy to see her, but it was one of them that summoned her. Camille reveals herself to be the one that summoned Nyx. She summoned her to investigate the murder of Maya and promises that discovering the truth will allow her to re-enter the coven. Little does Nyx know that Maya’s killer is already eying his next victim.
The Hunter Will Hunt
This issue does a great job of filling the reader in on the backstory of Nyx and revealing part of her past. Thomas Healy does an amazing job of showing us why Nyx is by herself, while still holding some things back to be revealed. You really start to feel for Nyx and her plight. You also get a good feeling for some of the other characters around her and what they will possibly bring to the table later.
The art is definitely a “Spawn Universe” style of art, and that’s not a bad thing. Nat Jones really flourishes in this environment and thrives on that style of art. The character design and surrounding world look fantastic, and really makes you feel like you are in a macabre underworld version of NYC.

Final Thoughts
Black Ritual: The Book of Nyx #2 is a really good world building issue. The reader gets a better feeling of what’s going on and gets to know our main character better. Even though this issue is a little slower paced than issue one, it still delivers what you need going forward. This is a definite pick up at the LCS this week, and if you don’t have issue one already, grab that as well.
Overall Grade: 8.5/10
