Hello Darkness #4

Edited By David Mariotte & Bryce Carlson

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

Dying For Quiet

Written By Shawn Patrick Boyd – Illustrated By Elijah Henry – Colors By Jason Wordie – Letters By Taylor Esposito

Dying For Quiet opens this issue of Hello Darkness. A young women Marie is stressed with the hustle and bustle of the city life. She decides to get away to a country oasis. Unfortunately for Marie this quiet garden isn’t what it seems.

This is a cool tale to open the issue. The story lures you in and then turns on you at the end. Add in the art which pops off the page and you have a strong opening story.

In Bloom

Written By Michael W. Conrad – Illustrated By John J. Pearson – Art Assistance By Lola Bonato – Letters By Pat Brosseau

Next up is a futuristic tale, In Bloom. In the future people want to become more in touch with nature. So, when a new drug debuts that will help people become more like nature of course it’s a hit. But what happens when the line between plant life and human life becomes blurred?

This story is a little out there and Conrad takes a big swing with it. Parts land, but ultimately it feels a little under explained. The saving grace for this tale is art. It’s very futuristic and surreal, giving it a unique look to this issue.

All Eyes on Me

By Chloe Brailsford

The next crazy tale is All Eyes on Me. A sadistic woman has people tied up and is claiming to save them buy a very brutal method. Eviler than her is the monster she serves.

This story is completely out there. The art is fantastic with complex simplicity. However, the story itself is so out there, it baffled me for lack of a better term.

I Can’t Take You Anywhere

By Robert Hack

Robert Hack is back with his one panel stories. As always this is a welcome pallet cleanser and a favorite of every issue of Hello Darkness.

The War Part Four

Written By Garth Ennis – Illustrated By Becky Cloonan – Colors By Tamra Bonvillain – Letters By Pat Brosseau

The War Part Four picks up right after the initial attack on New York City. The groups that we have been following are going through different situations. Each pair is in their own unique predicament, trying to survive. Who will survive and who will parish?

This story is the staple of Hello Darkness. Garth Ennis is telling a very human and very real story. As the issues roll on more of the story is revealed and the real-life horror is also revealed.

Final Thoughts

Hello Darkness has become a favorite book of mine. Issue 4 was a little less of what we’ve come to expect from this series. It’s not a bad issue by any stretch but compared to other issues it’s not quite the same level. No matter what this is still a series and issue you should check out at the LCS.

Final Grade: 7.5/10
