Dick Tracy has been trying to solve the mysterious Green Eye murders that happened at the begining of this run. The more he investigated, the more it was was revealed about the tight hold that organized crime had on his beloved city. Through this pulp-crime thriller, Dick Tracy made some enemies but he also made some allies. First, it was Tess Truehart, a news reporter who’s father fell victim in the slaughter that was dubbed the Green Eye Murders. Later after, he met Pat Patton, a WWII veteran like Tracy, in search for his bother’s killer.

Lips Manlis vs Big Boy Caprice

All the spilled blood in the city’s streets was because of two rival gangs. This organizations are lead by Lips Manlis. Lips is an established and well known criminal. Equally responsible is Big Boy Caprice, whose criminal enterprise has pocketed almost the entire city behind closed doors.

While the city has turned into a War Zone, Dick Tracy and his allies ran into roadblocks in their efforts to uncover the mob boss calling the shots: Big Boy Caprice.

In fact, it seemed like an uphill battle from the beginning. Furthermore, the deeper Tracy and his crew dug, the more everyone else in the city seemed corrupt or guilty by association.

Everyone is compromised

Issue #5 brings about the conclusion of the first story arc in this series. However, in a shocking turn of events, Tracy and Patton are arrested by the Chief of Police himself. The Chief gives legitimate reasons for Tracy’s arrest.

On the other hand, Tracy questions the Chief’s character and morals when it’s clear he will not go the same lenghts in the name of justice. What’s more, once they en route to lock up, Dick Tracy notices they’re heading in the wrong direction. This confirms all suspicions Tracy had about the Chief of Police’s involvement.

Subsequently, the story picks up the pace immediately after this revelation. The facts of this crime thriller story become clear, and all the player come out to assume their respective roles. Weather is Lips Manlis gang or Big Boy Caprice’s people, it does not matter to Dick Tracy, he will do his best to save the city.

How’s the art?

Gerarldo Borges pencils allowed this series to feel like a pulp-crime action thriller from the start to the very ending. Moreover, the detailed facial expression on each character makes the tone of each scene palpable.

Likewise, Mark Englert’s color palette is very suited for an iconic Dick Tracy story. This issue in particular, draws a line between the uncertain dread of the criminal underwold through the shades of the night and the hopes for the future of a new day with the lighter coloring tones.

I give this is issue a 7.5 out of 10

This brand new take by Mad Cave Studios does a lot of justice to the lore of the man in yellow, Dick Tracy. Happy to know they beging a new arc in December with issue no.6
