Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest episode in The Ultimates series from Deniz Camp & Marvel!
The main story at the start of this series has been focused on Iron Lad, Captain America, Thor, Sif & Doom recruiting other heroes to their cause, so that they can eventually go toe to toe with the Maker’s council. So far they’ve recruited Giant-Man & The Wasp, and of course they’re going to need some muscle. So just where are they going to find it? Well let’s jump into it and find out!
The Ultimates #3 by Deniz Camp (writer), Juan Frigeri (artist), Federico Blee (color artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (letterer), Juann Cabal, Jesus Aburtov; Inhyuk Lee; Ema Lupacchino & Rachelle Rosenberg (cover artists) is an AMAZING issue that is part origin story and part team building. amd all AWESOME. This issue is an ABSOLUTE must read, and one that will have fans for sure talking this week!
The main focus of the issue is the introduction into this new Ultimate universe of She Hulk! Of course most readers will know She Hulk as Jennifer Walters, the attorney with similar powers to The Incredible Hulk. But of course this is NOT the same She Hulk. The story starts at an island in the Pacific ocean where a Banner-Ulam Gamma Bomb has been detonated with a yield of 22.8 MEGATONS, which for reference would take out the ENTIRE island of Manhattan and pretty much most of the area surrounding NYC.
We then see Iron Lad, Thor & Sif arrive on the island during the present day and they go searching on the island. And unsurprisingly the island is not as average as one would expect, given how much radiation was dumped onto it. They encounter all sorts of giant monsters that have been mutated to Kaiju sizes.
Once they meet Lejori Joena Zakaria, aka She Hulk! She’s the protector of the atoll and everything that’s on it. We also learn of the after effects of the gamma bomb detonations that were done on the islands. And it’s honestly one of the more tragic stories I’ve read lately. I don’t want to spoil too much, because you have to truly see this to believe it.
My favorite part of the issue is the different take on the She Hulk origin. It’s different than what we’re used to, and it takes some risks. And it works in this isntance. Also the entire plot of the issue is very compelling from start to finish. Deniz & the entire crew are really building something special with this issue.
FINAL POINT: While this issue isn’t an action packed one, it does contain a great story that fans are going to want to read this week. It’s an awesome origin story that doesn’t stay on the beaten path and takes a few risks with where things go. It’s a very promising start to the series, and it’s a series that should be put onto everyones pull list at the comic shops.
SCORE: 9.5 out of 10
