Diving into the world of The White Trees, I harbored uncertain expectations. Yet, fueled by my admiration for Kris Anka and Chip Zdarsky, I brimmed with anticipation. Their amazing talents shine brightly within the pages of this comic book, delivering a thrilling journey that captivated me from start to finish.
Time to get into it
The White Trees starts off with a summons from the King Pherack for our main characters, Krylos the Bold, Scotiar of Blacksand, and Dahvlan the Swift. The three warriors have received troubling news that their children have been taken by the Trilonians just as they’re on the brink of war.
The story follows Krylos, Scotiar, and Dahvlan as they venture out to find their missing children. This shouldn’t be an issue for three people who have lived their lives fighting and winning wars. But does Krylos the Bold still live up to his name? According to two of the three warriors, he does not.
A rollercoaster of emotion
Something I really enjoyed was the flashback scenes of Krylos and his son, Chal-Kra, that paint a vibrant picture of what emotional trauma has caused Krylos to lose the heart of a fighter. It’s very easy to understand why he’s lost his warrior spirit, given all he’s endured. The flipping back and forth from his life with Chal-Kra to the present adds so much depth to an already complex story.
What I Thought
The artwork in The White Trees is simply astounding. The vibrant contrasts of colors of the characters versus the backgrounds makes you feel like you’re in their world experiencing all of the fantastical encounters with the characters. Every single fight scene in the comic will have your heart racing as quickly as your admiration grows with the fantastic drawing of the characters.
The writing was just as stupendous as the artwork. The storyline felt so compelling that I was wanting more and more, although it felt very complete. The comic book was a four course meal of everything you’d want in a fantasy story. With the writing, the artwork, the dialogue, I’d say the creative team knocked it straight out of the park.
