The Twilight Zone #9 – Dancing The Dance

Published:

What does life look like in the day of someone who repeats the same task over and over again? In a world, The Twilight Zone, where every fantasy exists, what of those who no longer have a fantasy? What of those who exist to work? What of those who they left behind?

Writing

This was really such a unique issue of The Twilight Zone. Juni Ba did such an amazing job crafting a story that, while feeling true to The Twilight Zone, is also surprisingly heartfelt. The story is so unique and so different from everything we have seen from The Twilight Zone so far that it really stands out. At its core, this is a story of sacrifice and love.

Ba crafts a beautiful tale of remembering who you are and why you do what you do. I will say as a Father, this issue hit me particularly hard. It’s sometimes easy to get in the rhythm of work, your day, and life in the quest to provide for yourself and your family, that you forget why you’re doing it. Ba captures that beautifully, as well as the joy one can feel when they remember why they work so hard.

As great a job as Ba did in writing this issue, the art was even more impressive. The art felt like it matched the story perfectly. Ba was so creative in the use of lines and techniques to craft this issue. The sand men felt every part as gritty and supernatural as you would expect them to be.

We’ve seen plenty of use of shading in Twilight Zone stories so far, but the different thickness of lines, the hatching, and the other line work that Ba displays in this issue really sets the issue apart from others in the series. This story and the art that accompanies feels both raw and yet surprisingly personal in the most refreshing way.

Final Thoughts

This was a beautiful issue. I love to see how each creator brings their Twilight Zone story to life and Juni Ba did something so unique so original that it immediately moves near the top for issues in this Twilight Zone series. The art is beautiful and haunting, and the story is compelling. There’s not a single thing I would change about this issue.

Overall Grade: 10/10
