“Pretty Hate Machine #3” Review – In a Violent Nature

Published:

The Run Down

If you missed the previous issue, first of all, how dare you? Second of all, you missed a truly amazing installment! Paranoia starts creeping in on Thomas after a cop confirms someone murdered his dad. Luthor convinces him it was his uncle and mom, but was it? Maybe, just maybe, this newest issue will tell us!

Writer: Ryan O’Nan, Tim Seeley
Artist: Hank La Marca
Colorist: Roman Stevens

The Writing

Fresh off of reading the latest issue, I can say with confidence that this is the best issue yet. O’Nan and Seeley somehow keep finding ways to one-up themselves. Here, they did such a great job of keeping the reader on edge. For almost the entire issue, I was questioning myself, “Is he about to show a body as an art piece?” The constant questioning puts you directly in the mindscape of Thomas, making the madness feel all too real. It also leaves you wondering if you would do the same in his situation.

There has yet to be a single issue of this series that I want to put down. Thomas’ seeming descent into madness is one of most fun and interesting trips this year. As a fan of Shakespeare’s work, this is absolutely one of the best modernized adaptations I’ve ever read.

The Art

Every time I see the art from Hank La Marca, I can’t help but think he can see inside the minds of O’Nan and Seeley. His style for the series perfectly matches the demented nature of the story. Even in scenes where there’s no violence, the destructive nature in each panel makes you feel like it’s there.

Now, I’d be amiss to say that the coloring of Stevens doesn’t lend itself to that chaotic, destructive nature as well. The colors here are so wide and varied that they make each panel feel unique and dynamic. They seriously make these characters and environments feel real. As a result, we as the readers feel an even deeper connection to everything going on.

Final Thoughts

The entire team are putting their all into this series and it shows. It continues to show its teeth while making readers guess with bated breath. If there’s one thing you can expect from this series, it’s that it’ll deliver.

Overall Grade: 10/10
