Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1-Wolves and Wolverines

Published:

Time changes but some things never do. Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon begins with the truth that someone will always try to create the next super soldier. Folks from Logan’s past begin to show up again, except this time they’re trying to settle the score for the right team.

Writing

The path to Armageddon begins here. Sure there are a few issues that are considered the prologue, but it’s here in Wolverine: Weapon of Armageddon that Chip Zdarksy begins the march and what a great first step. First of all, I love seeing Nuke back. Nuke’s had a mixed history of usage in the Marvel Universe so it was nice to see him back.

I really love the tone that Zdarksy set for this issue. There are looks back at the past as well as the obvious story set in the present, but it’s done in a way that is not distracting. The flashbacks portend something far more sinister than being simple flashbacks but they leave you wanting just enough. A few newer characters are introduced into the Marvel lexicon and we get to see some familiar faces. Are the folks we meet in this issue going to be the power brokers of Armageddon or are they simply going to be pawns? Thankfully Zdarksy doesn’t alert us to their status right out of the gate giving us time to build to the big Marvel event this summer while clearly setting the tone of what we are going towards.

The art team did a really great job moving the story forward with this issue. Zdarsky is a master storyteller, but it’s the team of Maresca, Aburtov, and Sabino that bring the words to life. The art definitely gives me a gritty days of future past feeling to it and I really enjoyed that.

I consider myself a pretty receptive person, but even the art worked to misdirect from the reveal at the end of this issue. Sabino’s lettering was great. I’ve always felt letterers are like QBs in football. They should win you games but shouldn’t lose you one. Sabino is one of the best in the business at that. The lettering is easy to follow and enhances not distracts from the story.

Final Thoughts

Overall this is a really good start to the story as we march towards Armageddon. It feels different than a general X-Men comic that features Wolverine. It feels more Logan than Wolverine even and honestly, I love that. There’s a lot of room to grow into Armageddon and what is coming but if this book is setting the tone of what we may see, I like where the art and narrative is headed

Overall Grade: 10/10

Until next time, may your pulls be magical and your multiverse remain stable.
