Temporal #3:Unlocking a Bold and Breathtaking New World

Published:

What happens when the “itch” returns? Marcus and Savannah traded their life as the world’s premier “temporal thieves” for a calm suburban lifestyle. After thinking her son Harper’s birthday gift a disappointment, Savannah steps back into the world of temporal theft to try and make the day even better. For Savannah, she may find out that getting out and staying out are two different things and that family secrets may not always stay hidden.

Temporal #3 Story: Back in the Game and Secrets Resurface

Savannah continues to deal with the fallout of her quest to give Harper the birthday gift she thought he deserved. With Harper taking center stage at his science fair, Savannah answers an invitation that may impact not only her future but also her past, while family secrets she has tried to forget bubble back up.

In this issue, Stephanie Williams continues to show why she is one of the best in the comic business at crafting relatable interactions between characters. Savannah continues to grow into a more complex character each issue, with Williams masterfully giving us a glimpse into the character’s thoughts, motivations, and worries. Going back to her work on Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Williams has always excelled at making readers feel like they know the characters. Temporal #3 continues this trend as we learn more about Savannah, and even Savannah and Marcus’s son Harper gets a chance to shine.

The Art

Asiah Fulmore continues to impress with her art throughout Temporal. Fulmore uses colors to create a striking visual distinction between Savannah’s personal and professional world. The industrial and drab grays and tans of the world of the Lokin Covenant are sharply contrasted by the bright hues of clothing and even Harper’s room.

This contrast creates a situation where the impact of Williams’ words strikes harder near the end of the issue as worlds begin to collide. The pairing of Fulmore’s art with Williams’ words provides a sharp image for Temporal. The slow infusion of more sharp colors into the temporal visits leaves me excited to see what bold colors and designs Fulmore brings into the next issue of Temporal

Overall Grade: 8/10

Temporal continues to take a well-loved idea (time travel) and bring it forward in a new, fresh way. Williams continues to excel in making us feel her characters, their worries, and emotions. Savannah’s arc so far speaks to something we all find within ourselves as we struggle with the question of if what we left behind was worth it. Harper continues to show major promise as a key character in future issues of Temporal in addition to being the cog that gets the wheels of Temporal spinning.

Temporal #3 isn’t the most action packed comic you will read, but it does such a great job in establishing emotions, relationships, and background that will likely play out in future issues. We get to see more of Marcus, Savannah, and Harper’s family dynamic in a way that is relatable and fresh. I can’t wait to see where this dynamic creative team takes the story from here.

Until next time, may your pulls be magical and your multiverse remain stable.
