The Story for ‘Return to Sleepy Hollow’ #2
Shawn: The writing was really well done. It provides a nice blend of time period language with modern convenience. Gilley creates an Arthur Conan Doyle feeling with Ichabod and Katrina showing the same level of personal and professional admiration for each other. Gilly combines with the artists to create panels that successfully include conversations between characters that is more prose than normally seen in a comic without the words impacting the art negatively.
Lauren: As the investigation continues for Crane and his former love, Katrina, so does the pile of bodies. While they sense a supernatural element to these deaths, what’s actually going on, they haven’t a clue. However, with more bodies dropping, the clock is ticking. Meanwhile, their daughter (unknowingly to Crane) shows off her “gift.” A gift that led to Crane returning to Sleepy Hollow, and one that may help solve the case.
The Art
Shawn: As good as Gilly’s writing is, the art is where Return to Sleepy Hollow really shines. Savanna Mayer’s art combined with Dearbhla Kelly’s use of color creates vivid imagery. The art creates a sense of macabre that is part CSI, part Edgar Allen Poe. Valeria Lopez’s lettering really makes the words pop but does so in a way that still fits the aesthetic of the story’s setting.
Lauren: Return to Sleepy Hollow is a dark story shrouded in death and mystery. All while still maintaining a beauty to it. There’s a love story between the gruesome deaths, and the art perfectly connects those two. Bodies ripped open, and yet beautifully connected back to the earth. They’re tangled in mystery and tree roots. The art continues to convey both the harsh and soft elements of this story.

Overall Grade: 9/10
Shawn – /10: I love the feel of this comic. IDW has a winner on their hands with this story and this team. It feels like a fresh look at familiar characters. It invokes feelings through word and art of the great dark and gritty detective stories throughout history.

Lauren – 9/10: I loved Tim Burton’s version of this classic tale Sleepy Hollow, and continuing this story 15 years later (26 in real life), feels like we never left. Whether the focus in the moment is solving a murder, or unraveling a personal secret, I’m invested. I can’t wait to see where they go with this, as Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel are once in the Western Woods.

Dearbhla Kelly did the colors, savanna did the linework. “Savanna Mayer’s use of color creates vivid imagery.” Please correctly credit people for their hard work next time! Deadbhla deserves her flowers!

Deadbhla absolutely does deserve their flowers. We loved both the linework and colors. I fixed that mistake. Thank you for letting us know!
