What would you do with eternity? Given the choice of living whatever existence you want for the rest of your existence, how would you spend forever? This is a question that David Freyne seeks to answer in the cleverly hilarious ‘Eternity.’ The film serves as a touching look at the lives we live and the afterlife that awaits us. It’s charming in a way that’s outside of the norm of what one would consider a Rom-Com. ‘Eternity’ is a film that’s going to spend…well…eternity with you.
Recently deceased, Larry (Miles Teller) finds himself in the Afterlife Embassy Suites. Becoming aware of his surroundings, he finds himself face to face with his now recently deceased wife, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen). Both staring down their eternity, in walks Joan’s previous husband, who had been killed at war, Luke (Callum Turner). Joan left with an impossible decision and must now choose between eternity with one of her husbands.

Going into ‘Eternity,’ I was really into the premise behind it. We all live many lives throughout the time we spend here on this mortal plane, and who’s to say one of those lives doesn’t appear waiting for you at the great Days Inn in the sky? The premise helped the film to be genuinely hilarious throughout. I had a good time and found myself laughing out loud more than once. The closed-down worlds that are on the posters in some of the backgrounds are hilarious. The easter eggs and little jokes here and there were all clever. Freyne did an incredible job of putting together a well-thought-out, hilarious dissection of what eternity really means.

Who Would You Spend Forever With?
‘Eternity’ works because of the chemistry of its cast. They’re all funny and nail the vibe that their character is bringing to the situation they all find themselves in. Elizabeth Olsen is truly remarkable. She has to play two separate roles essentially. Her younger one is in love with Luke, and the one who was married to Larry for 65 years. She had to nail the chemistry that exists between her and Teller and Turner while functioning from two different periods in her life. Teller and Turner are no slouches either. Both are putting in stupendous performances. BIG shoutout to the ACs, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and John Early; they were absolutely hilarious.

Making the Right Choice
As I watched the film, a question began to linger. How are they going to end this? Sticking the landing for a film like ‘Eternity’ is essential. There are only right and wrong answers when it comes to that question. Much to my surprise, Freyne found a way to end the film quite well, providing an ending fitting for people who are left to ponder eternity.
The clever nature of ‘Eternity’ doesn’t end with the writing. The set design and choice to make the afterlife essentially a Hampton Inn Extended Stay was brilliant. Why wouldn’t the afterlife look EXACTLY like that? The attention to detail from the sunrise and sunset sheets in the windows to the different worlds that people can choose for eternity is second to none. There are so many clever little jokes that you will absolutely have to go back to this film because you are going to miss at least one.

Final Thoughts
‘Eternity’ is a remarkably funny look at the afterlife and the lives we lead that get us there. The film is heartwarming and splendidly paced with an outstandingly hilarious cast, albeit imperfect. It was a joy to watch in a theater.
