STORY OVERVIEW:
Goldbeard’s plan to reclaim his treasure from Coldwater Prison involves setting up Tariq using a prison guard who wants out. The plan doesn’t work out how it was intended to, so the guard has to set Tariq up for murder. Murder at the prison results in the death penalty via the electric chair and Warden Wren takes great pleasure in serving justice. Unfortunately for Wren and everyone else in the prison Tariq’s unstable condition is triggered by electricity. When the glowing man starts to glow, it’s only a matter of time until he melts down.
WRITING:
This issue really picked up in intensity and ends with a hell of a bang. Geoff Johns shows how people can be blinded by the promise of things they want enough to put everyone in jeopardy. The kicker of the treasure only being important to Goldbeard and not worth anything to anyone else further shows how people are misled by greed and their own motivations. Johns also shows that even though Tariq can not control the Glowing Man, he still has the best intentions for himself and the ones around him.
ARTWORK:
The art in this issue is simply amazing and keeps the trend for art of the series alive. Gary Frank leads the art team and really brings something special to the book. The Glowing Man design is unique and looks awesome. The graphic nature of the aftermath of the Glowing Man on the people around him is gory yet very artsy. Robert Nugent and Brad Anderson make the art stand out with their color choices. The art team shows why they are doing some of the best work in comics on this book.
