The Scene of the Accident

As Speed Racer climbs the ranks of Formula X, the next step on the tour is an ominous one. The Great Alpine Race is where Rex Racer seemingly lost his life in an “accident”. So naturally a lot of Speed’s thoughts are on what happened on this course and being careful that the same doesn’t happen to him. But if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, Dante Ferno has brought in one of the aces of C.A.T to take out Speed once and for all. Thankfully the mysterious Racer X will be on the course to have Speed’s back. But will Racer X be enough to stop Kim Jugger from getting the job done?

A Race for Ones Life

Speed is really in some hot water in this issue. David Pepose really makes the reader understand the danger Speed finds himself in. Pepose stacks the deck against our hero and almost makes his chances of survival seem slim. The human element and emotion are what drives this story and series. This issue pushes those boundaries to the limit and leaves you on the edge of your seat by issues end. Come for the racing action but stay for the suspense and pure drama.

The art team crushes it again with this issue. Davide Tinto effectively depicts the setting of Speed Racer, providing readers with a compelling and immersive experience. The character designs are fantastic; well, the racing sequences are next level. Tinto really captures the emotion of the story with the art. The color palette selected by Rex Lokus effectively enhances the visual appeal of the artwork and draws attention to its key elements. Combine that with the exceptional lettering by Buddy Beaudoin, and it’s no wonder this series is one of the best at the LCS.

Final Thoughts

Speed Racer #4 is another slam dunk issue in this outstanding series. Human emotion leads to a great deal of awesome suspense. Well, the racing action gets the readers’ heart pounding. The cliffhanger end is reminiscent of the Batman tv series and serves as a great homage. Every month this series delivers and is a highlight of my Pull List. If Speed Racer isn’t on your Pull List yet, don’t wait any longer, add it NOW!
