Volume 3 of Quick Stops has brought us back to the movies. Issue 1, was the comic book Holden made for Alyssa in Chasing Amy. Then in Issue 2 we went back to the mall, and saw a scene from what should have been Mallrats 2. It was a beautiful, raunchy, and hilarious comic honoring the late Shannen Doherty. Now in issue 3, we’re getting religious with Dogma.

The Story for Quick Stops Vol. 3 #3
Someone has stolen the one and only, Buddy Christ! While, the authorities are determined to find the statue and punish the wicked who would commit such a crime, the reason he’s gone missing could never have been guessed. An innocent and pure motive behind this theft, reveals a return of the junkless angel known as Metatron. With many nods to the Dogma movie, and some hilarious pop culture references (including an absolutely perfect meta one), Metatron leaves us with a lesson. One both our thieves, and readers can benefit from.

The Art
In true Kevin Smith comic book storytelling, the art is black and white. What I continue to assume is a nod to his first film, Clerks. While I’ve loved the idea of that nod in all the Quick Stops comics, #3 of volume 3 stands out. The setting for this story was complimented beautifully by the black, whites, and grays. All the while still highlighting the over the top emotions of everyone’s favorite local weed dealer.
In this issue, Kevin Smith once again brought back a friend from the dead in a comic book: Alan Rickman. He played Metatron back in 1999 in Dogma, and has since passed. The art portrayed him so perfectly that I could not only see Rickman rolling his eyes, I could hear every word he said. The cherry on top was just how perfect Buddy Christ looked on every page he was in.
Overall Grade: 10/10
I vividly remember the first time I watched Clerks back in the 90s at the age of 16. I never in my wildest dreams imaged that the man who wrote that movie would one day bring me to tears while reading a comic book featuring some of those same characters. I literally went from laughing aloud to tearing up while reading this.
Kevin Smith once again managed to find the perfect balance of humor, nostalgia, and punch you in the gut feels. Not only did we get to honor a fictional character in this issue, but it was also a beautiful nod to Alan Rickman. If you can finish this sentence: “$15 bucks little man….” then you absolutely without a doubt should go purchase this comic! Snoogans!
Volume 3 has brought us back to the movies in the View Askewniverse. However, before that there were volumes 1 and 2. If you want to check out Volume 1 it’s a 4 story anthology of our favorite Kevin Smith characters. Then Volume 2 gave us a dark, twisted, and sex filled origin story of everyone’s favorite golden cow, Mooby.
