Quick Stops, Vol. 2 Issue 1, from Dark Horse Comics

If you’re a fan of Kevin Smith movies, these comics are all pure fun filled with ridiculous humor, and heart while expanding on a universe so many of us fell in love with almost 30 years ago.

This is the second Volume of Kevin Smith’s comic: Quick Stops. The last volume was four different issues expanding on the overlapping universe he has created with Clerks, Mallrats, and more. Attending a Hicks family reunion combining all the different Brian O’Halloran characters, and going down memory lane for a character who was briefly mentioned but died comically and tragically, were just a couple highlights in Volume One. Volume Two just kicked off with the beginning of the origin of everyone’s favorite golden calf.

The Story

This may be the most important comic book origin story to have ever been told. It’s the origin of the infamous Mooby’s mascot: Mooby. We begin with a podcaster ready to interview the creator of Mooby. We learn he originated from a very sweet story about a teacher who was just trying to make her student feel better. However, this story is told by Kevin Smith.

Therefore, we get a Catholic school teacher, dirty puns, porn, Virgin Mary references, drugs, and more. It’s the kind of story that Kevin Smith himself would boycott while pretending to not be himself.* However, this story is not done. We ended on a cliffhanger, and still don’t know the conclusion of how we went from a child’s story to the restaurant business.

*SIDENOTE: Kevin Smith once stood among a group of people protesting his movie Dogma, and even did an on camera interview with a news reporter. If you have never seen this video, it’s definitely worth YouTubing.

The Art

This comic gives the classic Clerks style feel in the black and white retro way that only Kevin Smith can make feel warm. It’s drawn like a classic cartoon or a comic you’d find in a newspaper that brings back nostalgic memories. Ahmed does a great job capturing the essence of the story through every page.

Quick Stops Rating: 9/10

Kevin has mentioned in interviews and at cons before that he loves to “pull out his toys and play with them.” His toys, of course being the characters he has created. We’re so happy that almost 30 years in and he has decided he still loves  playing with his toys, because we’re loving how this universe has matured while still maintaining the “dick and fart joke” type humor.

Overall, even if you didn’t see who was behind this story you’d know who wrote it. It’s a warming story filled with kinks, religion, and out of it all is born the legend of Mooby. So if you’re a fan of Kevin Smith movies, swing by your local comic book shop, grab a bag of chocolate covered pretzels, and enjoy! Snoogans!

Lauren and Matt make up the podcast: Hops GEEK News. It’s a weekly podcast that discusses all things geek pop culture, while enjoying a craft beer of the week. They also interview many different people from the comic book world and beyond. Check out their interview with Brian O’Halloran & Jeff Anderson AKA “Dante & Randall” from Clerks.
