Power Rangers Prime #10 – Black Ranger’s Backstory

It’s time for the Black Ranger’s Spotlight Issue. Writer Melissa Flores, Artist Simona Di Gianfelice, Colorist Joana Lafuente, and Letterer Ed Dukeshire made another fantastic issue.

The issue kicks off with a flashback to 14 years prior. We see a young Jun sitting on the couch in his house. Valentina’s ranger figures are on the couch when Jun’s mom walks in. She then takes him to see his dad in another room. 

His dad then gives him a test to see if he can withstand the training to become a Guardian. Jun is told not to scream, and he does, in fact, scream. We then cut to present day, and Jun is hiding out in Mark and Orion’s apartment. 

The 2 of them then get into a long conversation, and then Jun’s holophone goes off. He then heads back to his house, and proceeds to get attacked by a mysterious figure. We then learn it’s his dad. Jun’s mom then walks in, and his dad leaves. His mom then asks him about Lauren, and why he’s protecting her. 

We then cut back to a young Jun, and we see a little bit of a story of a team of Rangers. After seeing that, we see Jun and a young Valentina drawing a Ranger suit. Valentina’s mom and Jun’s mom then go and talk. 

We then cut back to present day, and Jun’s dad is about to interrogate Lauren. Jun and his mom are talking about how he can’t live in 2 worlds. Jun then morphs, and goes after his dad to save Lauren. Jun jumps into the cell and attacks his parents. His dad then attacks Jun, and he proceeds to get choked. Jun’s mom then attacks his dad, and in the final panel, Jun reveals to his mom that he’s the Black Prime Ranger, and that he needs her help. 

Overall Grade: 10/10

This issue was amazing. Melissa and her team really took his backstory, and really fleshed it out. I’m very excited to see where we go from here.
