Qualifying for Another Shot at Life
As Speed sits in Pops hospital room, he finds out from the doctor that Pops needs a heart transplant, and without insurance that will cost about a million dollars. With his back against the wall Speed needs to enter the Sword Mountain Grand Prix to qualify for the Formula X World Championship where the winner gets a million dollars. Upon his arrival at the track, Speed is confronted by C.A.T prospect Snake Oiler, which leads to an interaction with C.A.T owner Dante Ferno. This is the team that his brother Rex died on and is suspected to have played a part in his death.
After that awkward meeting, Speed bumps into Trixie who he had ghosted after meeting her. Now we find out Trixie’s family owns Turnwell Enterprises, and they are Speed’s last hope of sponsorship. Trixie gives him a chance and says if he wins the race Turnwell will bring him on as a full-time driver. So, as Speed enters the most important race of his life, he has more to prove and lose than ever. Can Speed overcome the odds and win his way into the Formula X World Championships to give him a chance to save Pops’ life?
From the Streets to the Track
Issue two builds really kicks the Speed Racer story into full gear. David Pepose really hits his stride with character development and making the reader care about our main characters. There may be no better character writer in all of comics than Pepose. On top of the character development, we also get a great story arc that will play out. Mix in some insane racecar action, and you have a perfect storm of a story.
The art in this issue is awesome and really captures the heart of the source material. Davide Tinto puts on a masterclass in how to bring a world to life. Everything hits on all cylinders and there are no weak points in the art. From the character designs to the smallest detail in the background, Tinto really crushes it. The race scenes are completely mind blowing and amazing. Couple the art with the color pallet from Rex Lokus and you have a winning team.

Final Thoughts
Speed Racer #2 is the perfect follow up to an amazing issue one. The story thickens, the characters gain more depth, and the racing action turns up. Couple that with the introduction of some new adversaries and the lurking Racer X, and you have a guaranteed checkered flag winner. This book is my Pick of the Week and should be on everyone’s must-have list this week. As a matter of fact, run to the LCS, get a copy (or two), and add the series to your Pull List NOW.
Overall Grade: 10/10
